Some statistics on Downtown Phoenix

These are from a beautifully put together map/info guide passed out at the It's Happening Downtown even last weekend.

A couple observations on my end...

First, 1 mile radius from Central and Van Buren isn't really downtown anymore, but they obviously did that to fluff the numbers a bit. That would basically mean from McDowell to Buckeye and from 15th Ave to 12th St.

Second, that's a really really low number of residential units in the last 8 years, isn't it?

Third, I wonder which two hotels are in late planning and which are in early planning. I'm guessing Palomar and Aloft are in early planning...but what are the other two?

Residential

• Population within 1 mile of Central & Van Buren: 16,457
• Total units built since 2000: 575 for sale, 1085 rental
• Total units in planning and under construction: 610 for sale, 391 rental

Retail

• 600,000 SF built
• 300,000 SF online within 2 years
• 21 restaurants/bars opened since 2007

Office

• Number of employees within 1 mile of Central and Van Buren: 83,292
• Existing downtown office space: 7,971,740 SF
• Under construction office space: 1,050,000 SF
• Class A vacancy downtown: 9.7%
• Class A vacancy metro: 17.7%

Hospitality

• 880,000 SF of space in Phoenix Convention Center
• 2,547 hotel rooms
• 2 hotels in late planning, 2 hotels in early development totaling 900 additional rooms

Infrastructure: Metro Light Rail

• 20 miles complete December 2008
• 27 additional miles funded
• 3,000 - 5,000 riders/hour initially
• 15,000 riders/hour at full capacity

Education and Research

• Students currently at downtown ASU campus: 5,000
• Students at ASU campus by 2015: 15,000
• ASU student housing beds as of 2009: 1,300
• ASU student housing beds at buildout: 4,000

Arts, Culture, and Sports

• 2006 sports venue attendance: 3,391,799
• Theatre seats: 10,621
• 2006 theatre attendance: 809,877
• Total yearly visitors to downtown Phoenix: 6,000,000

I would be interested in seeing the map that they use to put these numbers together with, if anyone cares to post it.

The blue area is the study area, the green is the greater downtown area, as defined by me but I think most on here would agree with it, and the grey is the Central Business District/Copper Square, as defined by the city.

How's come they skipped retail vacancy, and when did they do the Class A downtown study? That seems way optimistic, but it's great if it is current. I have a bad feeling even if it is 3Q it's not going to last long.

I have a problem with this map. If the study was done on a radius, why is the study area a square?

Don't make me think back to my junior high geometry skills, but I'm pretty sure a radius is a circle.

The green area is "downtown" as I've always known it.

I don't think you can draw circles w/ the google maps tool, or if you can, I was just doing it too quickly to bother with fancy things like sideless shapes.
