some use the word ghetto a bit too easily - the map shows there are no black ghettos in TO, 28% being the highest concentration.

I'm suprised that they have such a map.. Are they available for other groups of people. I wonder what the crime stats are for each of these areas?

I won’t use the word ghetto but keep in mind that many of these neighbourhoods are very large areas, with some of them having populations of 50,000 people. So it doesn’t mean that within many of them you won’t find good-sized areas where the vast majority of the population is black, or predominantly made up of some other group. This is totally normal in a large, diverse city by the way.

But of course, Toronto doesn’t have anything close to resembling the south side of Chicago, for example.

I've seen thematic census maps showing ethnic and religious percentages for Calgary, basically every group you can imagine. It was in an academic setting though and since I've never run into them on statscan I can only assume that they are among the many things you need a special subscription for. Universities all provide that service to their students so using a school ID could result in access to such maps.

it was just a general comment, I've heard it or read it many times, for both TO or Mtl, and that piss me off.

There is a black guy that lives on my street with a big afro but he's balding. So he has a black hair donut on his head. It's hilarious.

That's my contribution to the discussion.

That map is pretty much what Toronto residents already know. Black people mostly live in the north east and north west areas of Toronto, mainly in Scarborough, and North West North York and Etobicoke. Sadly the areas with the highest black populations also mirror the areas with the highest number of public housing in many cases.

But that map is pretty bang on. Go ride a bus in North East Scarborough, and often times if you are white, you will be the only white on the bus, while the rest of the riders are black.

You could be anywhere in Thunder Bay and be the only white person on a bus. Wow, what a diverse city we are!

(The other person on the bus is native.)

According to this map, the highest Black population for a census tract in Toronto is 28.2%. I'm not going to full-out reject your statement that you may be the only non-Black on the bus at times in certain parts of NE Scarborough, but it does seem to be in conflict with the data shown on the map. Either that, or the bus was pretty empty and your sample size was small.

Or that bus riders are not randomly distributed among the different racial groups in the area.

I've been seeing black squirrels up here more and more lately as well. What is the world coming to when they let them in the neighbourhood?
