Be Glad You Live in PDX

Hello everyone! I thought I would take time today to give thanks for living in good 'ol Portland, Oregon, specifically in terms of moderately aesthetic building design.

Sure, we may cringe at the awkward visage of the "Fugjoy" or lament the cookie-cutter boxiness of the Lloyd district, but at least we don't have this:

This is the shining pearl in the redevelopment of the downtown of the city I grew up in. Everyone is raving over the design. When I went back in April to bury my grandfather, more than one person told me "They had business at the RENAISSANCE" and paused, expecting me to raise my eyebrows in awe.

Just thought I'd like to show my fellow Portlanders how good we have have it, and many props to the PDC for working with developers to make sound aesthetic decisions on occasion at least.

Thanks philo

Give your significant other a generous hug.
Smile at your daughter and give her a soft kiss.
Sniff the aroma of the flowers about you.
Listen to the soft gurgle of the water feature beneath you.
Walk through the park blocks and and gaze at the large outreaching branches.
Sip the coffee and savor the toasted bagel.
It is the start of a spring day in Portland.
Say thank you and don't take it for granted

I have been to so many cities around the country and couldn't imagine ending up anywhere else. I'll be 90 miles away in eight weeks... as opposed to 1900 miles. Can't wait.

It looks like a parking garage with a pool on the roof. It looks like it is surrounded by chicken wire. The taller building is reminsicent of a prison.

I'm guessing this is a prison and that the name Renaissance comes from the rebirth of those incarcerated there. It isn't a place I'd want to "have business" but I guess that's the price you pay for a career in law or law-breaking.

oh, I see. we're looking at the parking garage side of a hotel.

Well, it looks like they at least designed the ground-floor connection. Downtown PDX has a few garages that are just as bad... if not worse.

It is a good sign that smaller towns are turning their attentions back to their urban environments, however. One small step...

It'd fit in nicely in the Lloyd District
