Indianapolis - Old Northside/St. Joseph (UPDATED)

Here are some shots from this summer.

Indianapolis
Neighborhood: Old Northside, a little bit of St. Joseph
This is a mostly residential part of the city, north of Downtown.

New photos added 12/5

They almost moved this building brick by brick for the library expansion...

Speaking of which, is almost done:

Didn't know this was in Indy

Some St. Joesph:

One of the ugliest buildings in the city:

Even in urban environments Mother Nature rules supreme:

Old apartments along Meridian St.

A quick Downtown shot

Cool neighborhood. I don't think I've ever seen pictures of Indianapolis on this forum, so thanks for the pictures.

My stomping grounds for 22 months. Definitely a nice and historic area of Indy. Thanks for posting these.

Very nice. I've never been to Indianapolis. What are housing prices like? In a couple of years I want to move away from the high prices in Austin and find a much more affordable place. I realize we're not nearly as expensive as the east and west coasts, but it's getting worse. Places that intrigue me are Indianapolis, Tulsa, and other midwestern cities.

I also never been to Indy. I seen downtown photos of it on this forum, and now your residential photo set. Thanks for posting these. They are really a good set.

From what I seen on this forum, Indy kind of reminds me of Denver. Denver was more like a midwest type town with a mountain vibe to it. However, it seems to look a feel like what Denver does in the city. This seems to be very close to the Capitol Hill neighborhood or uptown neighborhood in Denver.

The two may not even be close in comparison. I lived in Denver, and only seen Indy through threads on these forums (besides driving through the belt way). I am probably way wrong in my assumption.

I worked for my fraternity when I lived there, so I didn't have to worry about housing. From what I remember housing prices were similar to those in Texas, +/- 10-15%. Some areas (ie Carmel) might be higher and others might be a little less expensive. Downtown was nice...plenty of restaurants, bars, shopping, but surprisingly there wasn't a ton of housing.

If you're familiar with Houston, the photographed area in this thread would be comparable to just noth of I-10 from downtown, in terms of distance to the CBD...but instead of being low-end housing and industrial properties, it's a mixture of new/redeveloped housing with some professional offices/organizations.

I'd recommend Indy to anyone if you're looking to live someplace different for 3-5 years. You get 4 seasons, you have a fair amount of cultural amenities, you have nearly 10 colleges within about an hour's drive, and you're within a 3-4 hour drive of several major metropolitan areas. And IND's a focus city/mini hub for Northwest, so you have quite a few non-stop destinations.

Thanks for the comments everyone! I'll post some more photos later of different Indy neighborhoods that are rarely seen on these forums.

Indy's pricing is very reasonable compared to the coasts, and they are many different options. There has been a huge condo boom downtown in the past 5 years and there are numerous projects planned or currently under construction. For a list of Downtown residential properties, check out www.indydt.com.

Broad Ripple is another great area of town for a younger crowd, about 9 miles north of Downtown that has a large nightlife/restaurant scene and affordable housing in a very walkable environment. It's very accesible to downtown by bus, car and bicycle via the Monon Trail(http://www.indygreenways.org/monon/monon.htm )

I lived in Indy for just over four years and last April I moved to Tulsa. Housing costs in both cities are very similar and very affordable. Over all, I personally prefer Tulsa, but you can't beat Indy's downtown. It's very vibrant and there are tons of new housing options coming online, especially recently, however; you will pay considerably more to live in downtown.

Wonderful shots. Indy is a comfortable city to live in. The cost of living is low compared to most major metro areas.

Nice, that area around the Library is going to take off once the Library opens (which is soon or has already happened, can't remember) and the Cultural Trail is completed.
