Chicago's Armitage-Halsted Historic District

(Note: I'll be updating/adding to the pics in this thread periodically)

The Armitage-Halsted Historic District is an 8-block commercial stretch in the SW corner of the Lincoln Park neighborhood in Chicago, running between Racine and Halsted, on the El's Brown-Line Armitage stop. Most of the buildings date between 1870-1900. The area is quite well preserved, though occasionally a bit worn, and has some great pressed tin & turret buildings.

From West to East, starting at the corner of Racine & Armitage; pics are mine from this week:

Eastward down Armitage, towards Sheffield & Halsted; the first of the turret buildings:

That's it - thanks for looking!

I really like that area. Armitage is such a great street. Wonderful buildings, nice little shops & restaurants, and good pedestrian energy.

Wow, the craftsmanship in those old buildings really makes me sad. Modernism is nice and all, but look at what we've lost...

Awesome...if expensive

my question is why can't they build neighborhoods like this anymore?

Instead we end up with the New city, Cabrini (redo), & Roosevelt collection tripe

^^ These things accrue over time; but better to take care of what we already have. Chicago is blessed with so many great neighborhood buildings.

I doubt many people have the skills to do this stuff today. Lost arts.

the short answer: automobiles and the accommodation of them. cars and the infrastructure our zoning codes dictate that we must build for them simply make cities less urban and far more unattractive.

great pics of a lovely neighborhood, wrabbit.

I didn't even know that historic stretch existed until a few months ago. Going downtown for a walk I decided to get off Metra at the Clybourn stop, and just stumbled into it. I just wondered up and down streets for a bit, a very beautiful area.

And you can tell from the exposed brick sidewalls that the area was intended to be even denser. It never really filled in all the way before styles started changing.

The incredible western wealth of the Central City evident. I've yet to be able to walk my way out of the City of Chicago, seemingly an endless distracting spectacle. That turret at Armitage and Kenmore always an attracting distraction.
