Did a lightning strike damage Eiffel Tower in 1902?

According to http://www.paris-things-to-do.co.uk/...fel-tower.html in 1902 a lightning strie damaged Eiffel Tower that its topmost 100 metres had to be reconstructed. In my opinion this is impossible under physical points of view. What happened really?
