Fish Creek Provincial Park - Testing out the Canon

I just purchased my first DSLR, the Canon Digital Rebel XTi (with a Tamron 18-200mm lens) today. As such, I also wanted to test it out. So I took a stroll down into Fish Creek once I got home. Unfortunately, I am still getting used to the camera settings so not every shot is exactly a gem. However, I hope that this well get better in coming days. Most of the testing done today was in the manual mode, working with different ISO settings and such.

Some nice shots there Boris. I would love to get a DSLR sometime soon and it will most likely be a Canon.

Those, now those, are sharp shots. You make it sound like the camera is doing most of the work.

Hey Boris, hope you are enjoying your new toy. Is this photo of new bridge construction over Fish Creek?

I would have, but it was sitting out in the middle of a pond... the amount of human waste lying around is appalling. Beer cans, cigarettes, etc.

Rob: Yes, there are quite a few bridges under construction down in the park.

Wow, how Ansel Adams of you.

There is a bit of blur in a couple of your pics, but that is to be expected with a new toy. I look forward to seeing your updates with this new Camera.

Hey, we should get that group together to catalog the downtown skyline from various angles over time.

Yeah nice pictures. Do you have any you took with the D40 or was it basically unusable because of the lens issue?
Lets see a pict of your camera gear..
A DSLR will definetly make a world of difference in quality, sharpness and even the creative minds of the photographer. Nicely done joining the "Pro" side of things,
Fish Creek is really a very nice setting in our city. I like to ride my bike on its various winding paths especially along the river and by any of the ponds and wetlands to look for wildlife.

I wonder how much has changed since the flood of 2005. Did Fish Creek itself really change its flow or create new flows?
I still see the bridges at Evergreen where that big helicopter came and hauled tem off after the flood. I have a pict I will post.
One day in the summer I like to either raft down the creek to the Bow River or try and ride my bike down the creek since it aint very deep.

This is that huge skycrane helicopter which hauled away the bridges after the flood. 2 of em still remain at the parking lot at Evergreen.

Nah, I didn't get anything with the D40X. I only had it for a few hours. It is basically the same lens anyways, just a different camera body.

Yeah, it makes a world of difference, at least mentally. You feel much more... empowered, I guess. Plus it is fun to have the flexibility to work in many different modes even if you normally just use the auto settings.

I haven't noticed the creek having changed much, at least in my area. I remember seeing those bridges being hauled down. It looked kinda funny seeing those helis flying down into the park.

Nice pictures, nice camera. I used to have an original Digital Rebel, but when I replaced it I didn't go with Canon because the new Rebel XT was too small and I HATED the grip on it.

I bought an Olympus E-500 instead, which I love.

^Yeah, I've noticed the new Rebel Digital is smaller...I'd just try and get used to it, I really like the Rebels.

Great shots though Boris - one of my favourite places to take pics.

Not sure how your point-and-shoot was, but if using the auto-modes, the multi-point focus can be a pain sometimes - resulting in not focusing exactly where you want. Also, those bigger lenses take a steady hand! I had to buy a monopod to help steady the shot (though, I'm not impressed with the Sigma 200mm lens anyway).

Have fun! Look forward to seeing more!

That's my fave, very brochure-worthy.
