Early History
Wickliffe, Kentucky was founded in 1789 two miles south of the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. Because of its location it became a major trade post for the area. As time went on more businesses began to locate here because of its trade route and exploration connections and soon became a bustling hub for business in the area.In the 1800's over 300,000 people immigrated here from Western Europe to find jobs in shipping, banking and other various industries. In the winter of 1811-1812 a series of severe Earthquakes hit the area completely leveling the city and killing 6,000 people. During the civil war a union army base south of the city was one the main places for soldiers to pass though on there way to the south. It is estimated that up to 600,000 troops went through Wickliffe.
Now days the placement of the city isn't as important for shipping and trading but the city has became the headquarters of many of the nations top insurance and banking companies.Annually the city has billions of dollars flowing through it and much of that money is put back into the city itself.
