There's a new rendering out for the Seaholm Plaza Hotel. This 22-story hotel/condo tower will join the redevelopment of the old Seaholm Power Plant. The design will mimic the art-deco style of the power plant which was built in the late 40s.

Developers are expected to roll out today their vision for a mixed-use project that would transform the former Seaholm Power Plant into shops, offices, a hotel and condominiums by 2009.

The Austin City Council will get its first look at a new rendering of the project, which features a modern design while retaining the distinctive Art Deco building and its five signature smokestacks.

The decommissioned 1940s plant sits on about 8 acres along West Cesar Chavez Street overlooking Town Lake.

An adjacent 22-story residential/hotel tower and two-story office building also would have a modern design but with an Art Deco flavor.

I most excited about the fact that this new hotel wont have a hilton, hyatt, or westin logo on top of it. It's nice that Austin will have another hotel that's uniquely that city, like the Driskill.

Here's the rendering. I really like the design. So far it's one of my favorites of all the proposed buildings. This would be the view of it from the west/southwest.

The beauty of Seaholm is that it will add some height variances and material interest to DT Austin.

I've lived in San Antonio most of my life, with 4 1/2 years in Austin and 1 year in Johannesburg, South Africa. What makes San Antonio's DT is the base scale of 6-8 stories in the dense areas of DT. Austin always struck me as artificial just because of the number of vacant lots and 1-2 story buildings between skyscrapers. Now, the infill process will help to change that. Seaholm will add height, yes, but more importantly (I think) it will add some density and diversity. I also think it will offer a fuller, neighborhood feel. (And I don't mean neighborhood like suburb - more like looking down Park Ave in Manhattan and seeing 6-12 stories lining the street...)

Very cool for Austin. And maybe a nice blueprint for San Antonio and the Pearl Brewery site.

Despite the picture, I cannot see a hotel matching well with a power plant! Industrial settings are too, well rough and uncaring about aesthetics for a hotel. I do hope they prove me wrong.

Their planning to renovate the power plant and add retail inside so it most likley it will look much more alive than the image that you see above.

on one of the photos shown from the slides in that link there's one taken back then after it was built. one of the pipes says "austin the friendly city" i'm always hearing people visiting from newyork, los angeles, or other places refer to austin as having very friendly people. i've just never heard of austin as the "friendly city" but i think it certainly would live up to it.

Seaholm Hotel & Condos. It looks like it's around 300 feet tall or so and 25 or 26 floors.

Looks slightly taller than 300 feet now. Maybe 320?

The title of this post needs to be changed. There is no longer a hotel, and it is more than 25 floors.

I still only count 25 floors on that new rendering, but some of the floors seem to be taller. It is now a residential tower though, which is much better. Residential will tie in better with the retail component than a hotel would.

So will the tower be apartments or condos now? I counted 28 floors in the rendering, and maybe one more (trees covered it).
