Above Greenville, SC!!!!

OK, taking a break from the "big" cities.

Here is Greenville, a city that simply amazed me.

When I had to go to Greenville, I did not picture the little city that acts like a big city that I found. This city had an AWESOME vibrant downtown. It's walkable, condos and retail and cafe resturaunts everywhere, auto traffic is slow and everything is high end and high quality.

They just built a new ballpark and are developing that area now as well as an urban, mixed use area.

It's still way to small for me to live in, but if I had to live in a small city, I would hope it could be a nice as Greenville is.

I didn't have time to get many ground shots and the downtown area is very dense with trees anyway, so it would be a hard city to really show in photographs.

If you are ever traveling between Atlanta and Charlotte, stop in Greenville and see for yourself!

Enjoy:

I'll have to check the population of Greenville. Doesn't look all that small, actually. Looks like a beautiful place, close to the mountains.

Greenville is small on paper. The population inside the city limits is only 59,000, which makes it even smaller than Asheville (and you were 60 miles away from me up here -- so close and yet so far... sigh...), but if you factor in the suburban sprawl immediately outside the city, plus the little incorporated towns amidst that sprawl, Greenvile's population leaps up into the 200,000 range. It's also the urban hub for a very large, very disconnected region of sprawl and towns with a population of almost 900,000 people.

The problem is that South Carolina law makes it next to impossible to annex, which is a real shame because Greenville is doing an admirable job of promoting sensible growth and rehabilitating rundown areas, while Greenville County is so conservative and has its head so far up its ass that it needs a snorkel to breathe. You can literally see the line of demarcation between city and county in some shopping centers on Pleasantburg Drive -- the part within the city is well-landscaped and shady, while the part under county control is a barren asphalt sea with the occasional dead weed poking up through a crack for variety.

I used to date a guy from Greenville and between my experiences with him and the city, I used to outright loathe Greenville although I've since softened toward it a lot. I'm to the point that I can even compliment their gorgeous network of parks running along the Reedy River. You can walk all the way from Falls Park to the zoo in Cleveland Park two miles away with a minimum of fuss. I will say though, that the hardest thing to get used to is Greenville's lunatic street system, which was apparently laid out by blindfolded drunks hitched to plows -- the streets were plotted wherever they wandered. There's no other explanation. Hardly any street downtown even meets another at a right angle. They change names without rhyme or reason, and sometimes change back to their original name several blocks away. They stop, and start up again blocks away. It's almost as bad as Asheville!

Beautiful pics of course, but I'm most happy to see you've included a smaller city in your repitoire. I had the exact same impression as yourself when I first visited Greenville. And it's improved with each subsequent visit. Than ks for the pics KC.

Of course if you really want to go off the beaten path there's always Ithaca.

Outstanding photos! KCgridlock, your words sum up Greenville very well.

I discovered Greenville for myself about 4 years ago. It was love at first sight! I've lived in Dallas, Boston, DC and Pittsburgh....none compare to Greenville. Moved my companies regional operation here and the rest is history. Loving this place.

Thanks for those wonderful aerials, KCGridlock! That one of the bridge over the Reedy River Falls is amazing!

WOW WOW WOW!!!!! Thank you for taking these awesome aerials of Greenville, KCgridlock!

This city is absolutely incredible in so many ways, as you can probably tell by the photos above. So many details are in place that even walking the sidewalks around downtown, you can discover new clever aspects of intrigue and beauty. I had not realized just how beautiful the city is from the air as well though.
