The former Hyatt Regency Hotel will be sold and turned into 375 apartments
Quote:
An attorney for the unidentified buyer, Amir Makled of Dearborn-based Hall Makled, said Monday that the company plans to turn the 773-room hotel into a mix of 375 market-rate apartments and possibly a small hotel.

"We have a buyer who's well capitalized and has the credentials to redevelop the property to its prior glory," Makled said. “They are committed to having a very swift transformation and getting a project approved through the municipality and moving through all the construction phases as quickly as possible."

The hotel is owned by the U.S. and Canadian governments and the sale is pending through the U.S. Marshals Service, and could close in a matter of weeks.

Woah that's a big deal. I didn't realize that hotel had 700+ rooms (800 when it opened originally). That would have made it the second-largest hotel in the state, behind the Marriott Renaissance. I wish I had been around long enough to see the rotating restaurant and the monorail in action.

And it's owned by the US and Canadian governments? What the heck is that all about?

The previous owner forfeited the property to the US Marshall’s and the Canadian Government to avoid another tax charge he owes the New Zealand Government 700 million plus for a pyramid scheme.

But yes this is a very big deal especially with Ford’s investments in downtown Dearborn and the redesign of the engineering center. Hopefully something significant will happen with Fairlane Center out of all the original malls it’s in the best shape and has a great location even if it’s not going to be a retail center. Something interesting could certainly take shape in that location especially considering U of M Dearborn is right next door and it’s partially surrounded by upscale high rise offices and hotels.

Wow that's crazy - sounds like a mess.

My mom remembers riding the people mover - in the 70's / 80's. Just for fun, here's some vintage views of the people mover & mall, plus a look at the interior atrium of the former hotel. You might recognize the modernist style of architect Charles Luckman -

That hotel went through an embarrassing decline. Hyatt refused to remain with the property when it started to decline and then it went through 3-4 owners/names in as many years before being closed suddenly by the city for numerous code violations. I’m glad to see things working out now, though.

This will make MGM the second largest hotel in Michigan? Or MotorCity?

What about the Amway Grand Plaza hotel, in Grand Rapids? At least according to their website, they have 664 rooms (including the historic Pantlind Hotel plus the 29-story tower). MGM and MotorCity both have about 400, based on a quick Google search.

Grand Traverse Resort has 585 rooms, according to their fact sheet. I'm trying to think of other big ones...

Looks like you're probably right about Amway. Grand Traverse is probably third, followed by the Book-Cadillac with 455 rooms and MGM, MotorCity and Greektown with 400 each.

Could be cool, especially if they develop all of that parking effectively, and tie-it-in a bit more with the surrounding community. I'm glad they aren't just giving up on the tower completely and demolishing it. Just a block or two away are walkable, residential zones with sidewalks. Not to mention a Meijer, a Kroger, and a Lowes.

Dearborn Music celebrates grand opening of Farmington shop with ribbon cutting, sales, and giveaways
MJ Galbraith | Thursday, September 23, 2021

A group that included city officials and stakeholders, neighboring business owners, local musicheads and more gathered at the new Dearborn Music location in downtown Farmington the rain-soaked morning of Wednesday, Sept. 22, to celebrate the grand opening of the store with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The store itself had been operating under a “soft-opening” since the beginning of the month.

Awesome news about the Southgate Tower. I’ve been wondering when someone would purchase that property. It’s looking pretty rough.

Chaldean Community Foundation breaks ground on affordable housing development in Sterling Heights

Quote:
STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – A big development in Macomb County will give affordable housing to a large piece of the community.
The Chaldean Community Foundation broke ground Friday morning on a lot in Sterling Heights. The $25 million mixed-use development will have 135 affordable apartments and 9,000 square feet of retail space.
The Chaldean Community Foundation serves about 50,000 people a year -- 20% are not Chaldean.
The nonprofit said the project aims to address the long-term housing needs of thousands of families.
Planning for the project has taken several years since the location is in the Clinton River flood plain. The Foundation said it wants the space to become a cultural destination.

Pontiac-

State agrees to unwind Pontiac's Woodward 'Loop' that leaders say strangles their downtown

Quote:
MDOT's goal in Pontiac is to turn Woodward Avenue into a pedestrian-friendly series of two-way boulevards, with slower traffic speeds aimed at reconnecting neighborhoods to the downtown while inviting motorists to stop, shop and dine. Before Pontiac Mayor Deirdre Waterman ended her eight years in office on Dec. 31, she said getting approval from the state for this long-awaited Woodward project was one of her top achievements.
