I sort of got the impression they were just talking about the wood first approach they took for the main hospital as well?

Here's the matrix for inclusion of wood on the main hospital:

Shown is a rendering of the building. The design will incorporate natural tones, including wood, in alignment with the B.C.’s wood-first initiative, and draw from the natural history of the site and local First Nations.
Quote:
“While the materiality of the building is still in development, the overall intention is to harmonize the City of Vancouver’s material design guidelines with Providence’s Indigenous design guidelines and the design of the hospital itself,” explains Bagan. “The design of the CSRC building draws primarily from the natural history of the site, once tidal flats on the shores of False Creek, and a rich source of food, safety and sustenance for the peoples of the host nations.”

The use of wood in the hospital proper is just finishings, not structural. This is the sentence that suggests to me the structure will be something other than the de facto standard of concrete column and slab.

"The base of the Clinical Support and Research Centre will be comprised predominantly of reinforced concrete."

The exception that proves the rule.

A project I am involved with, we had to pivot from mass timber to steel/concrete when an adjacent proposed wet lab building was merged into it.

Found a reference to mass timber for the 2nd phase of the St Pauls Project. Page 27

A briefing note with cost premium analysis for mass timber was provided on July 21, 2020

The province also required the use of engineered wood where possible in the construction of the new St. Paul’s Hospital and other provincial builds.

120,000sqm for the hospital on its own, there will also be an attached research centre for another 34,000sqm which should start construction in the next year or two.

Thanks for the info, it’s rare to see a whole new hospital built.

I'm curious about the eventual impact of this hospital on the adjacent neighbourhood. Hopefully the influx of new medical staff and employees creates a pull for new business and housing as well as stronger support for existing business with this critical mass.

I can imagine new services being required in the immediate vicinity, like perhaps a grocery store that's open later.

The rental towers and office/retail project that Strand will be building next to the hospital on Prior Street has commercial space on the main floor. as well as office space in the upper floors of the podium. Initially it included a grocery store, at rezoning, but the DP replaced that with restaurant space, so there must have been some reconsideration of the viability of a grocery store at this stage.

Can't see it on the webcam yet but all the concrete surfaces are getting the plastic lining treatment so I guess it will happen on this side soon as well.

They've clad some of the bottom floor in the webcam image. It's the very dark brown panels, going over the mineral insulation layer on vertical battens.

Currently, construction crews are gearing up for the addition of the 11th floor, marking the structure’s full height. The project is set to reach the ‘topping off’ milestone this summer when the final concrete is poured on the roof of the new hospital. Then work begins on the exterior of the building, which is expected to continue into 2025.

From the Design Requirements:
