I don't want to stretch the purpose of this thread, but knowing what's going on elsewhere does give a better sense of what should be going on here...in LA...in dtla.

worrying about whether the oceanwide proj will be completed?

When I see these other cities, one which most ppl have never heard of, the other one the capital of a nation that was struggling not too long ago, I want to ask, when is LA going to have running water and indoor plumbing?....

superficial aspects of a town won't show all its angles, including bad ones....some of the bldgs in moscow aren't exactly the greatest looking, but their scale isn't too shabby either.

In 2019 it's more shocking to think of just how weak dtla was several yrs ago, even more so compared with what many well known cities have long been like. Now it's more shocking based on what even no name cities like one in northern Brazil and a city in the land once behind the former iron curtain are currently like.

Here in LA, we can't be sure the loopy part of a proj across from Staples will be built or not?.....Inferiority complex? I feel one coming on. At least we don't have much of a homeless & trash problem.

Thanks citywatch, Nice to see how the rest of the world is doing. I should spend more time watching these type of videos forget what out there. I'm familiar with their trains, and transportation systems not much on newer city development. Two good examples picked to view.

To keep perspective a stones throw outside of the city brings Favelas where you won't even get a response from the police unless your paying out... let alone running water and indoor plumbing.

at least this city in brazil is fairly well known throughout the world....a bit less than Rio de janeiro, perhaps, but still way more known than recife...but Sao Paulo is also even more....Let's just say ppl there are way past wondering whether a single new devlpt across from their convention ctr will be completed or not, loopy part or no loopy part..

the superficial aspects of a city can easily conceal both good & bad aspects of it. The bad side of brazilian cities is very bad. But, in turn, I recall the LA Times had a story about ppl from Moscow, back in the soviet days, visiting dtla. Dt at that time was in pretty bad shape. The Russian tourists were in a bldg...may have been the bonaventure...looking down on the streets & sidewalks of dt. They said something about where was all the ppl & life in LA?

The city...certainly in the past...came way too close to being not too much above a bakersfield or fresno, much less a sao paulo or moscow.

It's good not to be embarrassed about LA, then or now. But I realize my hope in the past for good PR out of visitors to the city....dtla included....has been expecting too much from them.

It could be, and SunCal's 6AM development would certainly help. Speaking of which, there was some news on that project a couple of weeks ago....

Love the new skyscraper, certainly don't want a Hudson Yards. A horrible development that has done the impossible - brought every New Yorker together in universal dislike. Los Angeles should strive for better.

^^^ I think what Quixote was referring to is the ground floor interaction. Yeah its a rectangular box above the 6 floor mark, but below that its geared more towards the street interaction.

I remember when every project that broke ground a few years ago, no matter if it were a crap box in south park or a tower in the financial district, everyone quickly labeled it a game changer and I wanted to barf. This however is in fact what a game changer is. Folks take notes.

This tower still confuses me. I like it but the entire concept terrifies me when I think of earthquakes. From the slender base to the sloshing pools. Scary. But I think the best thing about this is how if the project is sold to another company and they try to change the design, it MUST be reapproved again. We all saw what happened with Park fifth. So that's great IMO.

^^^ Interesting tower. Looks tall (~800'?).

I don't know if anyone has noticed but there is something sticking out from the left side of the building, near the roof. Protrudes quite a bit, and right now I am assuming it an observation attraction of some sort.

All of those protrusions are cantilevered pools
