New York may have more sheer bulk and average building height, yet it seems that it's harder to truly pierce the skyline in Chicago, with all the clusters of astonishingly tall buildings as opposed to New York's plateaus.

Went by there yesterday, and noticed some fresh spray paint markings and stakes on the west end of the site where the 7-11 used to be. These could perhaps be markings for caisson locations. No settelement survey marks yet though.
A number of people tried unsuccessfully to save those frame houses. There actually was some serious discussion of moving the frame house that was already torn down for the Elysian (great early 1870s house that used to contain a hair salon, almost in perfect condition), and Ald. Natarus was surprisingly open to relocating it, considering his history of nonchalance about preservation. The one shown in the photo and the other are rumored to be the oldest remaining buildings between State Street and the Lake, the River to Division.
Anyway, nothing came of it. I believe that house is already spoken-for by that stupid development around the corner, which was originally a phase two of the Elysian (as VivaLFuego said, 10 E. Delaware is the name). If that development for some reason does not take it down, then it might actually be saved, because it will be sandwiched in between two highrises.
The building to the right, with the brick rear, is a beautiful 1880s red-brick 3-flat that is also coming down.
^ Why, thank you. I guess I was one-off on the Victorian 3-flat, and it looks to be early 1890s or late 1880s. But the one next door is nice too, although a little rough around the edges.
Any word on the exact footprint of 10 E. Delaware? Are they sparing any of these? Of course, the corner is a goner.
Sorry this isn't exactly Elysian-related, but since this is its sister building, I think it's a decent place for this stuff.

That is good news on the frame house. I had thought the little cottage demolished for the Elysian could have been moved to Washington Square Park and converted to some kind of a community center. Its nice to hear that other frame house may actually be spared. From a 1872 picture taken from the Water Tower, it appears that both this house and the lost cottage are immediate post-fire buildings.
^ Developers are so heartless, aren't they? If most of this block gets replaced, I won't be so bothered, but the building on the far right (you can only see a part of it) has NO business being demo'd. Anyone know?
