Absolutely horrific numbers. I cant believe places like this exists in the US. That is higher than London, but London has a population 50 times that of Flint.

What is being done from the local community, state, government, social services, police etc?

Chicago is at 525.

Multiple kids (like KID KIDS) were shot this week with one killed. A retired teacher was killed while diving on the Dan Ryan the other day. A 70-year-old was killed while sitting in her car talking to her son (no apparent reason, no carjacking or anything, just random murder).

https://heyjackass.com/

Oh, and the other weekend the US saw something like 150 people shot. Chicago represented somewhere around 40% of all people shot.

As of 8/15 Louisville was as 125 homicides which is around 35% higher than last years record breaking total YTD. 18 of the victims are aged 17 or under.

Comparing the 2010-2014 timeframe the city had high 20 to low 30 murders by this time in the year before the steady increase began. Crazy how high the numbers are these days, basically a daily occurrence.

St Louis has had 90 murders through the end of June:
https://www.slmpd.org/crimestats/NIBRS001-C_210506.pdf
Last year it had 101 murders through June, and in 2019 it had 92 through June:
https://www.slmpd.org/crimestats/CRM0013-BY_202006.pdf (scroll to last page).

Kansas City has had 79 murders through July 16. Last year at the same time it had 101:

Chicago has had 382 murders through July 11. Last year it had 387:
https://home.chicagopolice.org/wp-co...21-Week-28.pdf

NYC has had 225 murders so far this year. Over the same time last year it had 215. So it's only up a little bit:
https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/nypd/dow...en-us-city.pdf

The one city I looked at doing really bad is LA. Through July 10 last year it had 156 murders, but this year that's up to 194:
http://lapd-assets.lapdonline.org/as...f/cityprof.pdf
St Louis had about half the number NYC did last year. A city of approx. 300,000 had half of the murders of a city of approx. 8.4 million.

That's also too bad. Kalamazoo city is of similar size to Youngstown (~ 74,000) and is having a rough few years. Kalamazoo County just had its 20th murder of the year too (its 10th within city limits). There were 21 homicides total in the county in 2020, with 14 in the city. We are in a worsening trend from the unprecedented violence of last year. I found this chilling data on the city's crime statistics website:

% Change in Murders (Number of Victims)

1 Year: 38%
2 Year: 83%
5 Year: 120%
10 Year: 267%

Murder #20 happened on Sunday morning with an early-morning shooting in the Northside. #19 was a Kalamazoo County Police Sergeant, Ryan Proxmire. He was just 39 years old and was killed in a high-speed night chase outside of the city when the suspect fired shots on his car. Sgt. Proxmire's death has rattled the community. It is the first active-duty death of a county law enforcement agent in 150 YEARS. Many other county officers were given leave to mourn the loss of their brother, and numerous other law enforcement agencies in the county stepped in to cover shifts around Kalamazoo, including one of my friends, who worked calls with Ryan. He touched so many lives, including my neighbor's daughter, who also worked with him for years.

Ryan Proxmire was promoted from Lieutenant to Sergeant posthumously. He was given a massive funeral procession and memorial, attended by thousands. Sorry for the longer post; it's not every day our community loses a law enforcement member.

Also last Friday, a senseless shooting spree happened at the beach in South Haven, Michigan, leading to the death of a husband & wife near the South Haven Pier. The shooter, Aidan Topher Ingalls, took his own life after emptying his magazine randomly on beachgoers.

Many are saying that this reckless violence could have easily been avoided. The 19-year old shooter had plotted a failed school shooting in 2018 at Paw Paw High School in Van Buren County. He had a history of mental illness. Had Judge Jeffery Dufon agreed with the Prosecution's request to try him as an adult at the time, this shooting might have been prevented. Part of the evidence submitted during that trial included a journal detailing his plans for an attack on South Haven

Aiden was placed on probation and put in a juvenile detention facility for a while. He was released on July 20, 2021, just 31 days prior to this tragedy. It is unclear where Aidan obtained the two guns used in the attack.

I wouldn’t put it that way but there is truth that the death leaves behind another broken family and it can’t be said to weigh more heavily than another. The only difference in this death being that this is what he signed up for and loved ones left behind knew that this was a possibility despite his ranking post unlike the tragedy in South Haven.

The takeaway is what’s important if all that results is another crackdown then we can expect the cycle to continue I can agree with the sentiment of aforementioned post. But if effort is put into mental health and gun control along with dealing with the results of decades of failed policy then these deaths won’t be in vain.

Hopefully with all the tragic events in SW MI the trope that the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun can be seen for what it is a false narrative the “good guy with the gun” got killed and left behind a family.

Flint hits 50 murders. The city saw 61 homicides total in 2020, 46 in 2019. At this pace, the city is on-track to have 70+ murders in 2021.

For perspective, Flint is about 1/12 the population of Austin (961,855 / 81,252). I know it's not a very meaningful computation, and definitely not a contest, but that would be like Austin having ~600 murders for the year right now.
