The sun is shining on a picture-perfect fall September morning in Ottawa as Michael Andlauer strolls into Al’s Diner on Clyde Avenue.
It’s before 8 a.m. and people are filtering in and out, making a quick stop to eat before heading to work or getting on with their day. Andlauer has a flight to Quebec City later in the morning, but he has found time for Postmedia and a chat about his role as the owner of the Ottawa Senators.
“Day one season ticket holder,” diner owner Al Ayoub tells Andlauer while introducing his wife, Anita, who is pouring coffee at the other end of the bar. “I go all the way back to the Civic Centre.”
“That’s the first time I’ve heard that,” Andlauer says while shaking Ayoub’s hand and greeting Anita before taking a seat and ordering a cup of coffee.
While Ayoub is telling his visitors about the good old days of lining up at the offices of Terrace Investments for season tickets on Moodie Dr. and regaling us with his experiences of leaving the Canadian Tire Centre parking lot, it’s easy to see that Andlauer is listening intently to every word.
