Stop bickering with NCC and build the freaking arena at Lebreton Flats already. That's the only thing that will move the needle.

The Ottawa Senators are making concerted efforts to strengthen their ties with the Gatineau community across the river, a tradition of outreach that has been highlighted by the team’s new owner, Michael Andlauer. In a movement to win over hearts in Québec’s fourth largest city, the Senators are set to bring an action-packed day of hockey directly to Gatineau’s doorstep on September 21st.

The story
Really happy to see the new ownership taking a keen interest in Gatineau. I never thought the team was that bad at including francophones in their community, and even Gatineau to a certain extent (I think they built one Rink of Dreams in Gatineau, and tried to get approval for a Sensplex once), but Andlauer is definitely doubling down.

Sounds like they are getting close to a deal with the MTO to allow cars on the bus on ramp in the Corel Centre parking lot.

Andlauer is certainly far more more present and open to speak to local media, even YouTube podcasts. Truly seems to be about the fans. Very different style from Melnyk's. Maybe the different generations (though they are only about 8 years apart) or Andlauer's modest upbringing.

Ottawa Senators owner Michael Andlauer drops game-changing hints over breakfast at Al's Diner
One year into his tenure as majority owner, Andlauer talks about his belief in the community, his desire to win—and getting Gatineau hockey fans on board with the Sens.

The sun is shining on a picture-perfect fall September morning in Ottawa as Michael Andlauer strolls into Al’s Diner on Clyde Avenue.

It’s before 8 a.m. and people are filtering in and out, making a quick stop to eat before heading to work or getting on with their day. Andlauer has a flight to Quebec City later in the morning, but he has found time for Postmedia and a chat about his role as the owner of the Ottawa Senators.

“Day one season ticket holder,” diner owner Al Ayoub tells Andlauer while introducing his wife, Anita, who is pouring coffee at the other end of the bar. “I go all the way back to the Civic Centre.”

“That’s the first time I’ve heard that,” Andlauer says while shaking Ayoub’s hand and greeting Anita before taking a seat and ordering a cup of coffee.

While Ayoub is telling his visitors about the good old days of lining up at the offices of Terrace Investments for season tickets on Moodie Dr. and regaling us with his experiences of leaving the Canadian Tire Centre parking lot, it’s easy to see that Andlauer is listening intently to every word.

Hadn't heard from Ian Mendes in a while. Now I know why.

St-Laurent was a sports journalist with LeDroit. He was one of the many who left when they stopped printing paper issues.

Ottawa Senators appoint Ian Mendes as vice president, communications and name Sylvain St-Laurent director, communications

OTTAWA – Ottawa Senators president and CEO Cyril Leeder announced today the team has named Ian Mendes as vice president of communications and Sylvain St-Laurent as director of communications.

“We are excited about adding Ian and Sylvain to our team. The broadcasting and media landscape is experiencing a period of dramatic change and along with it too, the sports industry is evolving and growing,” said Leeder. “We are certain that Ian and Sylvain will be important contributors to our team as we navigate the sports and media landscapes going forward.”

Mendes returns to the Senators organization, where he served as manager of communications from 2000 - 2002. He then spent more than 20 years covering the hockey club with various media outlets, including Rogers Sportsnet, TSN 1200 and The Athletic.

“Returning to the organization that helped launch my career is truly a special feeling,” said Mendes. “I’m excited to bring my skillset as a journalist and storyteller to the organization to help create dynamic and compelling content across various platforms.”

St-Laurent served as the manager of media relations for PWHL Ottawa in their inaugural season. Prior to that, St-Laurent covered the Senators as a beat writer and columnist for Le Droit for more than 20 seasons.

‘’I was very impressed when Michael Andlauer made it clear, as soon as he arrived, that the Senators are the team for the Ottawa-Gatineau region,” said St-Laurent. “I’ve spent two decades telling hockey stories, mainly to French-speaking fans. It's only natural for me to continue this work in the Outaouais and Eastern Ontario communities.’’

Mendes and St-Laurent will start their respective positions in early August.

Andlauer purchases additional 12 per cent stake in Ottawa Senators ownership

Michael Andlauer now owns a greater stake in the Ottawa Senators.

The NHL Board of Governors approved Andlauer purchasing an additional 12 per cent ownership stake in the Senators from George Armoyan.

Andlauer and his group purchased the Senators and Canadian Tire Centre in September 2023.

According to the Dalhousie University website(opens in a new tab), Armoyan was the second largest shareholder of the Senators and the first alternate governor of the club.

Other members of the ownership group include Jeff York, the Malhotra Family and Anna and Olivia Melnyk, the daughters of the late Eugene Melnyk.

Would love to see a breakdown of who owns how much. I imagine Andlauer had 51% right off the bat, with 10% for the Melnyk sisters. That leaves 39% between the rest, and well, I guess now Andlauer would have 63%.

Bodes well for the team and the redevelopment of Lebreton if he knows all the details and is putting more money in it.

With the new arena going to LeBreton, should we move the Sens Mile to Preston, that is named for The Lord Stanley of Preston?

First step is expropriating those fugly townhomes on the first block of Preston. I know those residents won't be happy but it's an essential city-building move.

That land was expropriated in the 60s as part of the wider LeBreton and what you see now is the NCC's doing. Would be a bad look expropriating again.

Playing Sim City and ignoring that humans live there, I would like to rebuild those blocks with high-rises on Albert with street front retail/restaurants, stepping down to mid and low rise at the back for a transition to the pre war area. As it stands, it will be a weird transition to have an arena and entertainment district on the north side and late 70s/early 80s townhomes and apartments surrounded by ugly walls across the street.
