A Tourist's View of Detroit

My first post. It's probably not the best idea to jump in with an amateur photo thread after lurking all this time, but here I am. All photos are taken by me, Zooie2010 on Flickr.

Thanks. I'm so glad I didn't let anyone scare me away from visiting (female traveling alone), and people sure tried. I think the scariest thing I saw downtown was that falcon.

It may also depend on the camera you are carrying. I would like to visit Detroit too some day with my DSLR. What I saw of in the 80's has kept me away....What camera did you use?

I'm not sure, but the famous Checker Bar is right the other side of it.

It's always great to see an outsider's perspective on our fair city, and I commend you for not just searching out ruin porn. Welcome to the forum and thanks!

Thanks for the comments.

I'm more interested in Art Deco than ruins, but I did get a shot of the Packard plant. The Show Me Detroit tour lady took me out that way when we went to Pewabic.

I only brought an old Canon Powershot, but I saw people down there with real gear.

The downtown area felt very secure. I'm sure a lot of that had to do with Jazz Fest, but my understanding is that there is always private security downtown. I honestly felt as safe in the immediate downtown area as I do in downtown Chicago. I wasn't out after dark.

I felt a little uneasy walking from the Doubletree at Lafayette and First to Campus Martius Park. Nothing happened, but the area is kind of deserted until I got near the park.

Not bad. I used to live a block away from that mansion turned Law firm and could see it from my apt window.

^^^If I'm not mistaken, that chateau has a for sale sign written in English, French, and Chinese. It gave me a funny picture of foreign investors driving around Detroit looking for properties and missing them because they couldn't read the for sale sign.
