I assume from the wording that they have been having problems with people abusing the space - hence the need to make a change.

No one (individual, institution, or other) should be required to allow strangers to use their private green space just because it's convenient.
I agree with you, and they should have a plan to restrict its use during events. But my point by saying GT is a public institution was to suggest that they should be more mindful of how to sustain the lawn as a greenspace for the neighborhood given their stature and responsibility to the public.

I thought the 15th Street extension was part of the AMLI tower but that makes it sound like it's not a sure thing yet. That would be strange since the tower is designed for a street to be there.

The 15th street extension now has funding for design and construction as mentioned in the article. I agree that the wording in that article is a little unclear.

I believe that partially demolishing that building is still part of the plan with the renovations: http://atlanta.curbed.com/2016/6/14/11924254/woodruff-arts-center-renovation-plans-alliance-theatre

Trahan Architects has a revised master plan that envisions the current Woodruff Arts Center re-positioned & renovated with a larger green space rather than expanding over to the Arts Center Site.

I can imagine Cousins/Integral would be partners in working with the Woodruff Arts Center should programmatic requirements warrant them needing some of that space to tie into the area, but we'll see what they propose in the coming months.

Looks like demolition of the north side of the Memorial Arts Building, to make room for a larger lawn. Before, the plan was to demolish the south side of the Memorial Arts Building to make room for a symphony hall at the corner of Peachtree and 15th.

While a new symphony hall doesn't seem to be part of the current plan anymore, maybe one can be added later to the expanded lawn.

Plans Filed For Midtown Dual-Branded AC Hotel By Marriott / Moxy.

Architectural firm Cooper Cary filed a handful of building permits with City of Atlanta late last week for new construction of a dual-branded AC Hotel by Marriott – a "European inspired design hotel" – and Moxy Hotel – a boutique hotel with "soul and style" – in Midtown.
The city filings come nearly one year to the day Noble Investment Group presented plans for the nearly 300-room hotel, at 53 14th Street to Midtown's Development Review Committee. The 165,250-square-foot dual-branded project will be built from the ground-up in the parking lot between Four Seasons Atlanta and Atlanta Marriott Suites Midtown hotels, on 14 Street.
Noble's Midtown AC will be the second in Atlanta. The commercial real estate investment and development firm is building the first near Phipps Plaza in Buckhead, a partnership with the mall's developer, Simon Property Group.
As for Moxy, the Midtown location will be the brand's first in the Atlanta market. Moxy has 37 outposts slated for mid-2017 and mid-2018 openings, according to the hotel's website. There are six Moxy Hotels worldwide today.

Hmm, one of only a couple Midtown projects I was sorta rooting against. I'd really rather see the Hampton Inn at 15th and West Peachtree take off.

Looks like this one will definitely be moving forward pretty soon considering over $130,000 in fees have already been paid.

Not to belabor the point but in both plans the east side of the Memorial Arts building is demolished creating a large lawn space with new construction on the south portion of the lot at the corner of Peachtree and 15th Street. In the current plans the building at that corner looks significantly different than the building called for in the earlier plan but that would seem to be the natural progression of a master plan.
