The heritage building at the northwest corner of Broadway and Kingsway has been closed by CoV engineers due to damage sustained to the building's facade from the tunnel boring.

You can see the damage in May 2022 photos of the building on Google Maps there's one severe crack above that cafe and a lot of other sections of the building have bad cracks in the brick. But most of it has existed for a long time and has progressively gotten worse.

How long is that guideway? It looks huge, and incredibly heavy. Something that big can't have possibly been transported along a road, so was it cast on-site?

Trucked onto site (with a steerable dolly) but yes, they are definitely massive. The columns are spaced at 30.5m so the girders would be just a bit less than that. They're placed two wide for each track section of the guideway, so 4 wide for most of the length and 6 wide for the pocket track section.

It's only about 33 tons probably? Large excavators are like 40-50 tonnes?

That one is actually number two, the first was being hoisted at the time of that picture.

Sounds like the other TBM might come out soon? Also as expected the facade issues are probably their own failure to maintain the masonry.

Something weird is going on with that brickwork. Both above the window and to the right of the canopy it's shifted.

It's worse to the right of that photo. They installed rods/anchors on the Kingsway side above all the window/door openings in some attempt I think to hold the facade together. It looks like one of those columns has settled and the facade is gradually leaning outwards from the envelope of the building.

Trucking beams in for the Skytain guideway sure brings back images of the original Epxoi line construction Waterfront - King George. Every section between the pillars had to be trucked in.

i wasn't alive at the time, but it reminds me when i watched this video of how they were doing it. people always say what old is new again.

They actually had a fairly substantial precast operation running when they were building the Expo Line.

They said that storage yard was three times the size of that photo with 19 acres.
