(Note that some of the other approaches into Ottawa that are closer to the river like the 17-174 or the A-50 in Quebec do give off more of an impression that you're close to a major city.)
The transition on the 417 coming from the east into Ottawa is very abrupt. It seems as soon as one hits the Aviation Parkway/174 exit, you're instantly in the city. As you mention, coming in on 17-174 is the small town to commuter suburbs effect.

The 417 coming from the west is a more gradual transition, but the massive Canadian Tire Centre plopped in the middle of suburbia gives hints that one is approaching a real city.

Surprisingly, depending on your access, so too is NYC, at least in the way that I approach it (from the Southwest, through Pennsylvania then New Jersey...mountains, trees, smallish towns, then suddenly WHAM! you are in the insane interwoven highway networks of East Orange, Newark, and Elizabeth, and right there in front of you looms the skyline of Manhattan.
Funny I was just thinking about that after writing my post.

The usual route from Ottawa-Gatineau to NYC takes you onto I-80 from Pennsylvania and across New Jersey. And yes the metropolis just jumps out at you very suddenly. (Though I am sure there are lots of towns, suburbs and exurbs hidden behind the trees.)

When you've been driving in something like this for a while:

https://www.google.com/maps/@40.8959723,...itch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i16384!8i8192

It's hard to believe you're around 25 km away from one of the biggest cities in the world.

Thank you for this! Seems like so much work though. Most of my photos are on my phone or on my MacBook. I’ll get around to it eventually - would be nice is SSP would enter the 21st century however

Welcome to SSP, which is like greeting someone who's just landed in 1942.

It is freaky, but have you ever drove to Winnipeg from highway 3? Or Regina from 33?

The city seems so close yet so far. With Ottawa, you get some signs.

Ottawa's Stumpline from the Southeast yesterday. Far left is Little Italy and the tallest tower in the city, Just to the right of that is Tunney's Pasture/Parkdale, in the middle is Downtown/CBD, and just right of centre is the Byward Market and uOttawa.

what I would give to see just one or two towers right downtown that are at least as tall as the tops of the tallest antennas on the towers pictured here.. Seriously... anything to just break the tabletop.

When I add quick approximations of some of the buildings in various stages of planning to the shot it looks a lot better. I put in the new 60 story tower in Little Italy that is planned, some of the planned and approved towers on Lebreton flats, the approved new tallest tower in the CBD, developments at Gladstone Station, the approved tower Claridge Hintonburg, and the approved 65 and 56 towers at Bayview. There are dozens of other towers planned that could be added, but these ones are really key.

Amazing shot. QC has such a great natural setting. Perhaps second only to Vancouver.

If you were around here long enough, you would realize that Ottawa was very under represented at one point.

Yes that was our experience.

Yes..Government buildings are /were designed to be functional and not architectural eye candy ..Double edge sword I suppose..On one hand the feds were being responsible, but as a result we get Ottawa's grey drab boxy skyline.

Yes, as a "lessee" the federal government isn't about making a visual splash with the buildings it is headquartered in, unlike private sector companies that dominate the market in other cities.

Hmm. I'm thinking about a few buildings developed by crown corporations vs private builds in Ottawa. Common characteristics are boxy, large repetitive floor plates but, the crown corporation development is more likely to have a grandiose feature such as an atrium. I don't know enough developments.

This one exemplifies Ottawa. Perhaps the boxiest, blandest, 1990s retro tower in the nation. This may have been designed as straight up PoMo too.
