Casinos are deliberately overstimulating. Flashing lights, no clocks, no windows. Busy carpet patterns keep your visual system occupied without providing anything to focus on. Your eyes skim past it and end up back on machines, tables or signage that makes the casino money. Often the ceilings are so boring that you look down.
There's also an element of wayfinding. Carpets get less busy in places where they want you to walk and very busy where they want you to slow down or get lost.
There's also some culture to it. Old school casinos were kitschy and tasteless and keeping new ones that way makes it feel like a CASINO and not a hotel lobby.
