Pretty much every residential tower in Richmond built after the 90's looks exactly the same, with the punched windows, fussy repeating corners and matching hats on top... Centro being the only exception. The other is Flo, but they just look like squashed versions of early Concord Pacific towers.

they look like squashed versions, because there is a height restriction as to how hight developers can build these towers up. i wish they could relax the height restrictions just a bit so that there is some variety, and not a table top effect (probably too late for that).

lots of immigrants from asia live in richmond, particularly from mainland china, hk and taiwan. used to living in apartment buildings. so it's not surprising then, that there's a lot of condo's being built almost everywhere. i think richmond is going to be one of the densest cities in the lower mainland (partly because they don't have much space, and will be forced to build up, as opposed to building "out").

but i do agree with you. there needs to be better design to these towers. they DO look all the same :S

getting a bit ridiculous.

i'm actually quite fine with richmond having short towers; it makes sense given the soft flat land. I would prefer seeing a more urban mid-rise (6-12 stories) typology covering all of central Richmond.

It is not a rejection, the planning commission is saying that the plan as of right now is insufficient. It is important to note that they did not mention that there was too much density, just that they needed more clarification on how the development was going to integrate with the city.

Seems like good news to me really.

Wow - that's pretty much the last parcel on that strip (the corner lot with the strip mall that formerly held the Bread Garden) to get a highrise. That'll be one of the densest blocks around.

Oh well... hope they have plans to relocate before construction starts. =O

The good thing about this one is that it has a podium with retail - a good thing in downtown Richmond - unlike Richmond Towers (next to Versante) or Prada (to the west)

Perhaps more significantly, on the same website there apparently are 2 hotels and an office building "coming in 2012" called Versante Hotel.

Yup. I think Richmond needs to go this route when building their condo's and apartment buildings. I haven't even heard of the Versante project. That'll be an interesting project!

Nice find - didbn't even notice the link.
It says the address for Versante Hotel is 7451 Bridgeport Rd which looks to be at Bridgeport and Sexsmith/No. 3 Rd.
Sort of adding to the River Rock district.

The Versante condo on Lansdowne turned out nicely - so here's hoping this one does too.

BTW - same developer as the funky modernist project on East 8th Ave. in Vancouver, just west of Main Street.
Could it be that a mainland Chinese developer is more adventurous with design?

drove by the CCM tower/shanghai wonderful site just now. no DP signs anywhere to be seen so i'm guessing this project is still a ways off.

they are piling up for another highrise on the corner of westminster & cooney - SE corner, across the street from pizza hut.

quintet site is humming along. the sales centre on the minoru blvd side is closed and fenced off. looks to be demolished soon.

finally had my cam with me to take some pics - this neighbourhood has popped up near the 176th street border crossing these are all around 0 - 3rd ave - quite crazy to see

Thanks for the pics! An area or housing type we rarely get to see on these boards. Now I don't have to wait for Google Streetview to drive through the area

Not sure exactly how I feel about the architecture. It's nice to see someone try something new with the whole Cape-Cod nautical theme, but I don't think it would look fantastic on a grey, rainy day 10 years from now...
