Edited to add info
Let me just ask this: If you've truly seen any renderings of the tower(s), are they good looking buildings that will truly change the Midtown skyline?

Wasn't addressed to me, but since I've seen the renderings too I'd say from a height and massing perspective, the answer is YES they will be monumental. But from an aesthetic perspective, the answer is NO... I'd call them refined but nothing groundbreaking.

Less aesthetically pleasing / refined than the original towers? I just hope they aren't giant glass rectangles.

I would agree with both statements, and they should be making an appearance Tuesday at the DRC meeting.

We definitely need a SSP representative to be present at this meeting. Sounds like it's going to be a pretty big one.

While I don't necessarily want a glass box, I'm all for glass aesthetic glass architecture. Doubtful Atlanta gets a Dhard or Gherkin, but anything slightly differently shaped I welcome. While not glass, I love how the transamerica pyramid displays for the San Francisco skyline.

The big difference is that those are all office towers. This is a hotel/condo tower so developers generally don't go all out with aesthetics with crowns, spires, or unique shapes.

Thanks for the tid bits guys. I think many of us are just longing for something that will truly impact the skyline and as long as it's reasonably attractive, it will be a huge win for Midtown.

They do look much better!

When does the downtown DRC meet? Will the Underground project be within their purview?

Agreed with what others have said. I am most excited about the prospect of two huge towers that close to each other rising where they will (hopefully). In that way alone it will be a game changer for midtown.

WOW! PLEASE build this. This is leaps and bounds better than anything they have released for this project, and it is at my back door. It is almost too much to dream for, but it is exciting.

Wow, looks to create an environment that would lure people to frequent and want to live near the proposal. Excellent architectural renderings.

As for Midtown's DRC, I'm hoping we see a few projects discussed.

Plans for Underground Atlanta get even bigger

The developer planning to buy and remake Underground Atlanta has contracts to buy more than a dozen additional buildings in south downtown that have sat blighted for years. The Mount Pleasant, S.C.-based developer WRS Inc. has under contract about 14 buildings along Peachtree Street that sit south of Underground. Those properties, such as the Metro Mall at 73 Peachtree St., include a collection of row-style buildings totaling about 240,000 square feet that once made up the heart of downtown Atlanta’s retail district
WRS would renovate the buildings and bring in new ground-floor retailers.

Midtown Site Opinion

I am all for new residential towers in Midtown, but I would rather not have one or two aesthetically mediocre buildings taking up prime real estate and possibly marring an already well regarded Midtown skyline for the sake breaking some height barrier.

We have some rather fine architectural examples in close proximity to the Midtown site that may be obscured from different skyline vantage points with less-than-noteworthy structures.

If they're not going to "step up to the plate" with something worthy of the site, I would rather they limit the height to 500-600ft, as to not block the already attractive structures in the vicinity.

If they are going to "shoot for the stars" in regards to height, I would rather see them used to fill in the skyline gaps further south.

However, beggers can't be choosers, so I guess I will take what I can get and be happy.

It's worth adding as well:

Quote:
WRS will serve as the master developer of the project. Plans include both market-rate and student housing, a hotel, a grocery store, an entertainment venue and other commercial space.

The Kroger Co. is reportedly in talks to anchor the project, which would bring a much-needed grocery store to downtown Atlanta. But a lease has yet to be signed.
