Squares are GSA owned space and circles are GSA leased space. All of the leased space comes out to almost exactly the floor space of the Moss Courthouse and about 2/3 the space of the Bennett Building. You could terminate all downtown leases and move that workforce into the Moss courthouse and it would be a huge win for efficiency. Instead they will try to close the Bennett Building and terminate leases inducing a 500,000+ sqft deficit downtown.

Yeah but that assumes efficiency is the intended outcome. I don't think it is.

What's stupid is that *if* they succeed, they will quickly learn that essential functions are failing. And then a future administration will have to spend a fortune hiring and training new people.

And then they'll spend a fortune leasing space or building a new building....

Even though we used to have a paid-off building that was perfectly good.

It's not like the typical "I can see their rationale, it's just misguided and greedy" politics. It's literally a "WTF, none of this makes sense even for your ideology" politics.

I’ve worked in the Wallace Bennett Federal Federal building for years as a contractor to the government. I can tell you that what they’re doing to dismantle the government is sloppy and irresponsible. Is there some waste? Sure. But waste needed to be dealt with with a scalpel and not a chainsaw by an unelected official. One day they’ll cancel one of our contracts only to reinstate the contract the next day because of making a “mistake”. There are many good, talented people I work with that have revolutionized how we manage our lands with technology saving the government money over the years thru improved resource management. We’ve served our country for years and decades as civil servants. We’re now all scared of losing our jobs. Now with the shuttering of the Bennett building, which also came without warning, the federal workers will have to either commute to Ogden, scramble to find some other space to lease in SLC, or fail to return to the office and lose their job. There’s no forewarning when decisions are made or explanations. They cancel contracts and fire employees at 6 pm with no explanation. They decide to shut down a building without warning us. We have a whole server of computers we will need to move to somewhere undetermined. There are important data that help our country operate on those computers. We’ve been censored and not allowed freedom of speech. It’s lunacy

If people really felt how you feel, you would not need to share it here where nobody views you as credible or knowledgable (or cares tbh). We already read through many dumb comments on development related things daily in the search for real information on the topic - I am sure most here absolutely do not care about your dumb political comments or sob stories

I usually skim fast past everything not building related and I never complain about the boring sports talk but this affects all of us even if we aren't loosing our jobs. Politics is always messy but our country has never seen anything like what is happening and to call it sob stories and cringey is despicable and deplorable.

Could you post something about development then Rockies? Because from my perspective you did exactly what myself and others did. You posted a paragraph of your feelings and opinions. I’d love some development new and if you have any that would be awesome. I think we’d all love some more development news.

I am credible but do not want to share all my information on a public chat forum. Next time I’m in the Wallace Bennett Federal building to move all our computers before it’s sold off I can snap some pictures of the surrounding development to prove my “credibility” if that helps

Sorry, but no, I will not be silent while this Fascist administration dismantles our democratic institutions, raids our government to sell off to their buddies, actively villainizes and harms people I love and care about, and plays with people's livelihoods.

Frankly I don't care if you don't want to see it. Your indifference only makes me want to be louder.

Besides, this debate came out of an announcement that they were looking at closing some federal buildings. Buildings that exist within our urban areas, and that could potentially be targets for projects going forward, assuming they are actually closed or sold off. That is actually urban/development related. Not to mention the impending steel tariffs instituted by your lord and savior that could cripple development.

I don't mind a hotel proposal at that corner. It's way better than a gas station! The architecture is pretty mid, but I don't expect much from a hotel.

I still would love to see some kind of upscale restaurant/brewery/whatever, but I'll take this over nothing.

Other, minor news, the Ramada/Holiday Inn Express, former home of Star of India has been demolished and is in site cleanup mode.

LHM has been busy doing a lot of site clearing and demolishing areas for the coming Power District development.

While I'm sympathetic to your cause (and agree with all of it, more or less), it's a bit "apples and oranges" for a message board thread about development in Salt Lake City.

Have you tried the "5 Calls" app? It gave me an easy way to phone my representatives and keep nagging their staff.

And also, staying on topic on this particular thread isn't silence. It's just — having a conversation that about what's on-topic here. (In the same way I have to have many conversations throughout my day that have to stay on topic.)

In a perfect world, Salt Lake City would be loaded with cash and could do what residents want — buy out that corner and make it part of Sugarhouse Park.

But we don't live in a perfect world. There is a colossal housing shortage. The lot is valuable. And the developer is proposing something that looks reasonably attractive.

And it's not a gas station. Sounds like a win.
