Is the West entrance at the base of the Transportation building more to the right side of the Rideau Centre not close where the new Laura Secord store is suppose to be located? When they construct a ticket office in the area of the former food court, are they going to include a pub in that area?

Not sure if the OC Transpo ticket office could move or where, but I don't think there is much room for it at that entrance. Looking at the rendering of the Transportation Building, the station entrance will be to the left and Laura Secord to the right.

Now the old Food Court has pretty much been completely taken over by Shoppers Drug Mart, as per the Rideau Centre's plan, so I don't imagine any sort of pub or restaurant might open in that area.

It might make more sense to put the ticket office underground, in the station itself.

Wow! The map of the Rideau Centre on Cadillac Fairview's website really sucks! Not only does it look like something you would see 20 years ago, but they have mislabeled the MacKenzie King Bridge as Daily Ave, there is no indication where the doors on the second level (near the food court) actually take you (to the corner of the real Daily Ave and Nicholas) and the parking is just grey with no labels. All I can say is WOW, they must be starving for money.

Daly is correctly labelled (runs under the Rideau centre, meets Colonel By between the hotel and convention centre). Mackenzie King is further South (between the convention centre and DND).

Sorry, only looked at L1 (where Daly is correct). Other two levels have M-C bridge mislabeled.

It still boggles me why they didn't connect the east entrance with the new expansion. It would have been so easy to do, and the more access points the better.

Re-routing locals to Mackenzie King would be/will be the ultimate in transit planned by people who drive.

What a dumbass town.

The whole website is terrible. It used to be much simpler to use, very intuitive.

Citydwlr, is the video about Simons a very recent one or is it dated two or three years ago? The video dated 2013 about the completed Rideau Centre expansion had a list of shops that are not even included neither in the existing Rideau Centre nor the expansion. The only two shops that are correct are Nordstrom and Simons.

Thumbs down Cadillac Fairview Updates at Rideau Centre

Whenever I check the updates of Cadillac Fairview at the Rideau Centre in which shops are opening, it has not been updated recently. It has not been updated since last July. I also want to know what is going to become of the former cinemas. Last December, when I spoke to one young construction worker about the future of the Rideau Centre cinemas, he told me that he heard that they were thinking of putting a new cinema there, but it is not possible. The screens, chairs, and snack bar have been removed. He told me, if no cinema wants to go in that space, they will just leave an empty space. The former cinemas have been left empty for three years and they still did not come up for a permanent lease for the cinemas. They better hurry up, because the Rideau Centre expansion is going to open soon.

Gonna say it:

The new Rideau Street entrance of the Rideau Centre is gonna start looking so dated, so quickly, it'll make your head spin.

Article on Simons from Retail Insider

Quote:
La Maison Simons Reveals New Ottawa Store Details

Quebec City-based large format retailer La Maison Simons has revealed new details about its CF Rideau Centre store in Ottawa, opening on August 11 of this year. It will be the 13th store location for Simons and the second in Ontario, following the opening of its Mississauga Square One store in March.

The two-level, 100,000 square foot store CF Rideau Centre will be located in the mall's expansion wing at the corner of Rideau Street and Nicholas Street. Simons will occupy the top two levels of the four level expansion, which will incorporate the facade for the former Ogilvy store which once occupied the site. The fourth floor, being Simons' top floor, will be encased in glass which wraps up and over to form part of the roof. Simons’ bottom floor (third floor of the expansion), will include part of Ogilvy's facade, which saw bricks carefully removed, cleaned, catalogued and reinstated to preserve its architectural significance.

The store's interior was designed by award winning firm figure3, incorporating the most celebrated elements featured in Simons' West Edmonton Mall and Montreal CF Galeries d'Anjou stores -- including high gloss, bold colour fitting rooms, decorative woven animal heads and 'porta pottie' change rooms for young men. Architectural firm Lemay Michaud created the store's overall framework and configuration at CF Rideau Centre.

Each Simons’ store features a significant work from a Canadian artist. At the CF Rideau Centre location, Torrential Red, a striking installation by Shayne Dark, will be suspended in the centre of the store in Simons’ escalator atrium, connecting the bottom and top floors. Mr. Dark used ironwood saplings gathered from the forest floor near his home in Kingston, where he saturated the trees in a brilliant red pigment. He then intertwined and assembled the ironwood elements to create a 22-foot tall, 8-foot wide suspended sculpture which represents the contrast between urban and natural environments.

'Torrential Red', a striking installation by Shayne Dark, will be suspended in the centre of the store in Simons’ escalator atrium, connecting the bottom and top floors.

The store's bottom floor, located on the third floor of CF Rideau Centre, will measure 35,000 square feet and will feature the following departments:

Djab: cutting edge, urban streetwear for young men
iFive: stylish active wear for women
Miiyu: feminine lingerie and loungewear for women
Twik: dynamic fresh looks for young women
Women’s Accessories

The store's top floor, located on the fourth floor of CF Rideau Centre, will measure 56,000 square feet and will include the following:

Contemporaine: elegant women’s career and casual wear
Edito: men’s and women’s designer collections
Icône: cosmopolitan styles for the modern woman
iFive: stylish active wear for men
Le31: classic and avant-garde fashions for men of all ages
Maison: modern décor elements for the home
Men’s Accessories
Customer Service

The fourth floor will also feature Ève Café, a counter service café offering French Canadian inspired items with seating for 12. All recently opened Simons stores feature this dining concept.

The store will have some unique features specific to the Ottawa location. A separate set of stairs will connect the men’s shopping areas, allowing men to access the space without venturing through women’s fashions. The top floor of the men’s environment will feature large windows with a view of CF Rideau Centre’s rooftop garden. Views of the Byward Market and the newly created Ogilvy Square (a pedestrian area on Nicholas at Rideau) will be visible from the iFive women's department on the bottom floor and from Ève Café and Maison on the top floor. Also unique to this store is how the youthful Djab and Twik departments will be together, with direct access to the mall.

Simons will feature significant window displays on Rideau Centre's ground level facing Rideau Street, despite not having retail space on the street. A ground-level elevator will bring shoppers directly to both the third and fourth floors.

Simons part of Rideau Centre revitalization

Another addition is coming to downtown Ottawa to add to the already growing retail destination.

Simons, a clothing and home décor store, is scheduled to open in the CF Rideau Centre on August 11th of this year.

La Maison Simons started in Quebec in 1840 and has since branched to 13 different locations across Canada. It is a family run business going back five generations.

“We’ll be one of the only, or fewer, Canadian private family businesses left in retail. We’ve got some unique things from our merchandise, to our service, to our store décor,” said Peter Simons, the president of La Maison Simons.

Bringing Simons to the capital is part of a much large revitalization plan at the Rideau Centre. It will be the anchor of the newest wing near the mall’s front entrance on the third and fourth floor.

“We’ve been under construction since 2013, we’ve opened a new dining hall and some new retailers, and we’ve renovated the interior and the exterior of the property. We opened Nordstrom last year and the last piece of the puzzle is the opening of our expansion,” said Cindy Vanbuskirk, the GM at the CF Rideau Centre.

Other stores coming to the same wing will be H&M, Anthropology, Massimo Dutti, and a new home for Zara. Vanbuskirk said the combined cost for renovations at Rideau is $360 million dollars.

Peter Simon’s said the timing was right to move into Ottawa’s downtown.

“I think we’ve been looking at Ottawa for the last 20 years and really we’re a small company, we don’t have unlimited resources so we’ve had to make decisions, but I think in the last 20 years now more than ever there is a real vision for the downtown core.

It will become a new attraction in an already growing destination.

“We’re going to see all kinds of new features here, construction starting this fall, we’re also anxiously awaiting the opening of the Andaz Hotel, the first in Canada, they chose the market, and really we’ve got LRT coming, the Rideau Centre expansion. It’s big changes for Ottawa,” said Jasna Jennings, Executive Director of the Byward Market BIA.

Explain. Dated how? What are the design elements that "date" it negatively?

J.0T13, I read today's article about the Simon's store and the shops going in the expansion. I already know about it. I know that an Anthropologie, Simon's, Zara's, H&M store, Massimo Dutti, and Disney Store are going in. I know exactly well that the Simon's store will open on August 11th and it will be located on the third and fourth floor. I do not want to go on the Grand Opening day, because there will be too many people. I will go later just to see what the store is like and get something that I want there. They are opening a sort of Cafe in the Simon's store. Once the expansion opens, I will take a look at the store.

The use of expensive materials throughout the mall and an eye for actual design will ensure it takes a long time to look dated. The only thing they've done that concerns me is the glossy white paneling they chose in spots like the Mackenzie King entrance, the Frieman bridge, and most unfortunately, in spots on the Ogilvy building. The fact that some of the first level columns are this tacky white paneling rather than blending with the brick building is a problem.

I think it probably will look dated in a few years, but I think that would be true of pretty much any design (look at how dated things built in the early 2000s look now). Someone will probably post in 2030 about how tacky all of that chrome and bright white from the 10s looks.
