they should have been padded but anyone slamming into a metal post padded or unpadded at 140km/h without anything except your skin as a barrier is going to suffer fatal injuries.

so sad.

Georgia to remain at Games despite luger's death

Georgia's Olympic team confirmed Friday afternoon that it will participate in the Olympic Opening Ceremony tonight despite the tragic death of luger Nodar Kumaritashvili.

The 21-year-old was pronounced dead at the Poly Clinic in Whistler after a horrific crash during his final pre-Olympic training run at the Whistler Sliding Centre.

Someone suggested in an interview on CTV News (I think) that clear plastic barriers like they have at hockey rinks would probably have been adequate to prevent death in this accident.

I'm getting ready to watch the opening ceremonies on CCTV 5 here is Shanghai and I just heard what I guess is China's official song the games. It's called Vancouver, I Love You and, man, is it terrible.

What was wrong with the national anthem? It wasn't meant to be sang along with like at a hockey game, it was a performance to listen to and show off our anthem. It was done so well

The anthem needed stretching out for the sake of the flag raising. I don't see why this is any worse than other "long" renditions of the anthem.

Some of you are very hard to please... I thought it was one of the best opening ceremonies ever (until the hydraulics failed).

The projection system and props were amazing. The music was fantastic and all original work. The performers were top-notch.

I loved the First Nations welcoming segment, I thought it was very tasteful, and probably did a lot of educating of worldwide viewers.

I wish Furlong had said half as much (or less), but just remember how painful that part was at Beijing, too.

Wow there have to be tens of thousands of people around Robson Square right now.

Nearly 10,000 watched the ceremonies at David Lam Park, outside, too.

They said they wouldn't seat the foreign dignataries until the 4 chiefs sat and they were still 'welcoming the world' in that segment.
