I hope he is honored at the Opening Ceremonies tonight. This is just so tragic. Only 21.

CTV has said the family has not even been notified yet.

Yes, there was a luge/bobsleigh/skelton world cup held there 3 weeks ago, however training has been ongoing at Whistler for weeks/months and everyone is familiar with tha track (not all contestants have been to a COP world cup recently), so I don't think it would even be feasible to move the 3 slidding events to COP within the next two weeks.

Starting lower down on the track is the likely outcome.

would starting lower down really make a difference? it sounds like this accident happened near the end of the track... i'm sure potentially lethal speeds could be reached regardless....

That would seem to be the "right" thing to do. On the other hand, it would undeniably cast a pall over what is supposed to be a celebration, and possibly over the whole Games. Tough call.

Good article on the Sliding Centre in the G & M. It sounds like some designers tried to push the envelope too far, who's responsible for that?

Jaques Rogge says the death "clearly casts a shadow over these Games".

They still have the video footage on CTV's website. I'm a little surprised that they haven't pulled it. I wouldn't really recommend people seek it out though. I saw it before it was announced that he died and it was already sickening to see.

I agree with whatnext on the fact that VANOC has some tough decisions to make on how to deal with it during the opening ceremonies. I think that a moment of silence is probably appropriate though.

I've heard rumours that they're withdrawing from the Games and/or not marching in the Ceremony tonight

The Toronto Star has some horrifyingly graphic photos. Looking at where he leaves the course, does it appear that they built a small wall after completion, and that perhaps that wall should have been higher?

Yeah don't watch it...I saw it sort of raw in HD 720p on TV and it was clear he died instantly. Really disturbing IMO...

CTV says 1000 protesters at the VAG - they (the protesters) say its a family friendly quiet event but the reporter notes that many of the protesters are wearing things over their faces to hide themselves

I'm sorry to all you olympic obsessed out there, but I saw the video, and my GOD!!! If I could grab the idiot who is responsible for safety on this track and smash his head against a steel post, I would... What utter incompetence to leave those posts unpadded!!
