I wonder if it has heritage designation, like the Kaplan Building at the other end of the block? If so, someone should assemble that with a goal of a new tower in between them and retaining the heritage facades.

I don't see it listed

No, the old funeral parlour at 2590 Granville isn't a heritage building. Assuming the proposed tower at 1470 W Broadway ia approved, the only location to squeeze a tower onto that block would be combining either 2590 and the site next door, or more likely the EQ3 building and its neighbour. In the first scenario keeping the old building would add a lot of cost and create design complexity with no obvious pay-off as it can already be developed up to 40 storeys. If that was the assembled site, it would make more sense to demolish 2590. Combining the two lower density buildings makes more sense, leaving the two old bookends.

Yes, it opened Monday. Walked past yesterday, surprisingly quiet inside. Looks good on the corner though, nice to have a strong anchor there again!

Yes, that's what I had in mind (bolded).

Can anyone remember what EQ3 was originally? Wasn't it a White Spot way, way back?

It used to be Bombay & Company, but I can't recall what is was before that.

I'd forgotten about Bombay & Co. I thought I remembered a big sushi place and long ago a White Spot but that could be wrong.

Have to agree but in person it appears very open to Robson with great sight-lines into the store.

Lot of interior photos via the Daily Hive piece :

Nah.. The plan was to bring back the look of the original occupant - the Vancouver Library. I think it looks great!

Next thing people will be saying "they should have tore it down and built a big box style store!"

Ron.

The original library had the mezzanine inside so there was more going on visually to see from the outside.
Without the mezzanine, the top half of the store (high ceiling) looks empty/sparse to me, but the modern aesthetic is like that.
But agreed that it's nice the windows are not blocked off!

I never recall seeing a White Spot in this area. It's a Jordans rug store in the 1980s

https://searcharchives.vancouver.ca/2506-granville-street-corner-broadway-and-granville

It was their original store since 1929

https://www.instagram.com/jordansflooring.ca/p/CmMz-FOPhlp/

Bombay moved into that location in 2015

https://www.straight.com/blogra/520001/g...s-30-year-old-broadway-location-burnaby#

It was a Bombay since the 2000s? There's a photo from 1999 but it's blurry if someone wants to take a stab at what was operating in there.

There was a White Spot on that block in the late eighties early nineties, but not sure which building it occupied. You are not crazy (unless we both are ).

White Spot was in one of the storefronts where EQ3 is now located.
It used to have an arching window.

Yeah, that's it with the arched plaster around the awnings.

Hudson's Bay will not be opening in Oakridge Park. I wonder if Simons is considering it and perhaps that's why they've been holding-off on any decision regarding the former Nordstrom space?

*just noted that this is also posted in the Oakridge Park thread

There even used to be one at 1025 Robson

https://searcharchives.vancouver.ca/white-spot

And a drive-in at 850 Burrard

https://searcharchives.vancouver.ca/white-spot-drive-in-restaurant-850-burrard-street

Fish & Chips 40 cents
Chicken Pickens 75 cents

A shopping complex on Granville before the airport seems to have been inspired by the old log house White Spot on the site

OK, nice to know I'm not losing it. The reason why I asked is, I wondered if Toigo still owns the site.

Whoh. Hopefully there has been a Plan B as a contingency.
