That poor time-worn hotel just can't catch a break. Wondering how it can get worse for it as it is gutted from the inside? It bursts into flames.

These people...

https://w42st.com/post/historic-hote...ng-demolition/

Quote:
Despite significant community opposition to the “Hudson Yards-ing” of the area and the loss of historic facades, the project is moving forward and early stages of demolition were already underway at the time of the fire.

While Monday’s blaze may have sped up the Hotel Pennsylvania’s sad, slow goodbye, the symbolism of a once-revered urban icon succumbing to the swings of the wrecking ball and the flames of destruction is potent. As EB White wrote while at the hotel itself, “New York provides not only a continuing excitation but also a spectacle that is continuing.”

^LOL the quote from EB White they decided to use is a perfect example of why this hotel shouldn't have been preserved. Jeez, talk about totally, obliviously contradicting yourself.

Both are solid Foster designs. They would make a good pairing on the skyline. I like them. I'm just worried about that northern face on Penn 15.

I remember back in the early/mid 2000s checking these forums and hearing about the Hotel Penn redevelopment and after all these years it's just now starting to take fruition.

Happy for a new shiny skyscraper yet sad.. like losing an elderly relative that you knew your whole life.

My energy for preservation is best spent elsewhere at this point, but it is hard to let go of it. The hotel holds a special place in my heart.

If it was sitting anywhere else preservation and full rehabilitation would probably be justifiedbut this site is just too lucrative. I am not, and will likely remain not a fan of the Foster design we seem to be getting, I would have been thrilled to see either one of the Pelli designs more but I'm not in charge of anything. Besides being a train wreck of a design that relies on trend du jour elements that likely won't look half as good in reality, I think it takes away from the gracious uniform canyon effect that exists down the avenue that is currently held by the Hotel Penn.

I stayed at the hotel a couple of years ago (wasn't my choice). It was in worse shape than I expected it would be, but it was always going to be taken down. So I guess it was to be expected. Shocking to see the conditions though.

You're going to have to clarify what that means.

It looks like a tool box is what he's saying. Or at least that's what I think.

We have become so spoiled with new towers.

Renderings have been posted on Yimbyforums. I can’t copy and paste for some reason.

They appear to be the same rendering we have been seeing these past few months. YIMBY's last article was in Jan. of this year. Are they planning to proceed right away on spec once they demolish the hotel or is the actual construction start dependent on a large tenant lease? It seems that they could possibly start sooner than the construction of 175 Park Avenue, but I hope that building is not delayed.

They’re official renderings, and they finally show the north facade.
