I like how they always complain about the buildings being “glass office towers”. Where have they been for the last 50 years? Glass office towers, how shocking.

All buildings must now be the Long Lines building. Glass is so 2015.

All that can be true and still have the desire to see masonry above 1,000'.

If I were an architect I would simply propose an all-brick, no-window version of 432 Park Ave right next to it. Imagine the beauty

1) I'm imagining it and beauty is not what comes to mind.
2) You're not going to sell any tenants with a building like that and your company would go bankrupt. Or rather the developer would simply reject your plan.

I don't know, Gene Kaufman seems to be doing OK despite his buildings.

There's a reason that developer keep building giant glass buildings, and that's because it doesn't matter what the building looks like on the outside to most tenants. What tenants most care about is the inside and those giant floor to ceiling windows are a major plus to tenants for a variety of reasons.
If you can make what you are proposing and still give tenants what they want, good on you. But I doubt it.

Yeah, lots of people desire the 1930’s. But we’re approaching the 2030’s, and we live in the world we live in.

I imagine they are horrified watching every pane of glass rise here…

Renderings I made of Penn 15 - a lot of details were constantly changing across the official depictions, so I had to take some guesses for my model:

A bonus: some speculative designs I made for the northern core; one in the style of 425 Park Avenue, and one featuring glass elevator shafts, in the style of Foster's Circular Quay Tower in Sydney:

No offense to your model (it's great work) but this thing is a monstrosity. I like a lot of the ideas but overall it completely lacks any grace.

Look at how much more successfully Renzo Piano acheives something similar. (I know the site conditions are different) :

^ That’s horrible.

This shows why I don’t like this particular blocky design so close to the ESB. But there will be other towers, including Macy’s, to distract.

Ok maybe my example isn't the best but it doesn't make this tower any better.

I wouldn't say that's horrible. It's quite nice. The design for "Penn15" is horrible. It's barely even architecture. It's just zoning + max square footage + setbacks = output. Zero soul, zero consideration to the context. And for those who mindlessly defend every skyscraper revealed here - look to Brooklyn Tower, 175 Park, and 111 W57th St for context-driven design. Penn15 is garish.

Sure, you wouldn't say it. But it's a giant cheese grater. Who want's 1,200 ft of that?

I don't mind that Renzo Piano tower, and not just because it reminds me of a tower in my city. I will say that modern architecture is one of those styles that probably won't age well. 15 Penn Plaza is an example of that. I think modern architecture is too simple and bland too much of the time, and way repetitive too much of the time. There are several examples of a trend within the style that you can point to and see in multiple cities.

And they aren't seriously thinking of making the north facade look like that are they? What a missed opportunity.
