Do we have plans for what could be going in there?

Interesting!!!! I don't think I've seen any plan for this block yet! most likely soil remediation or something to do with Zibi heating and cooling system potentially

They are digging out the new subterranean base for Alpha Flight after they got evicted from under the Centre Block during the renovations. You weren't supposed to take pictures of this, I'd delete them.

Nice to see two downtowns slowly being connected. Didn't think I'd see it in my lifetime. Add the Sens to LeBreton in the next 5 years and we've got a whole new feel to this area.

If this image from their site is anything to go by - it looks like it's part of a park. There's not much detail - but maybe there will be steps down to a platform of some kind?

The best bet is probably soil remediation by NCC

Work will be undertaken on the eastern end of Chaudières Island, to stabilize the shoreline. This project is at the design phase, and design options are currently being considered....

Also design wise those building are pretty basic so far.

For sure, the design quality of the Ottawa side vs Gatineau side is quite jarring. Not a whole lot better than what I would expect from Brigil, while in Ottawa, they are getting Minto, Richcraft and above quality.

Looking forward to seeing the progress in 5 years to see if it all ties in better together.

That said, overall, this is still a great project for both sides of the river.

I'm perfectly happy with the height of the riverfront buildings, because taller buildings are planned right behind them. If they built any taller along the river, there would be no river view units available in the next row.

It appears they will be blowing up this bedrock after all? Or that might be some old concrete foundation.

^its really intriguing! I wish someone knew what they were doing. Maybe its part of the Zibi chaudiere island eastern park development? We'll potentially hear something at next week NCC meeting

I believe that could be the Ultimate Sanitary Pump Station depicted in the top-right of this plan:

Would be cool if Zibi was allowed to redevelop Lemieux Island to give access to better island use for Ottawa and a new area to develop beside Lebreton and Zibi. Could also have access to those other smaller islands where they could connect them to make a bigger area for Lemieux Island redevelopment (Merrill and Nichols Islands as greenspaces or could make small shops/markets on them with walkway bridges between those and Lemieux).

I hope Zibi can do something fun with this canal, assuming it can be done safely.

In the summer, you could build some kind of protected swimming pool with a small wooden beach on the right.

In the winter, hang some string lights above it, setup some chairs/tables and heaters, and you got a nice skating rink directly connected to a ski trail.

With many people moving into Lebreton flats and nothing like that within 3km distance, it could be a hit with a relatively small investment.

I recommend going there in the summer to review the dark, quickly moving water that disappears into a horrifying long tunnel before being blasted through a turbine before getting an answer your question I don't think anything will be happening with any of the open water surrounding the site.

Now, if Hydro Ottawa were to decommission their 1 or 2 MW turbine (Sorry, edit, it's 8MW and 8 MW in generating station 2 and 4) and stop the flow of water to a substantial degree, this WOULD be a perfect place for swimming/skating like you say.
