Yes indeed. Would have helped if ABC had fulfilled their promise and routed traffic coming out of the park from Nelson and the centre of the West End back to Park Dr/Beach but here we are.

No the local opposition is that cars enter the West End to get to this hotel and drive around in great numbers, not whether the get into and out of the Park.

I've spoken to them and they just don't want taxis and Ubers anywhere near their community.

Yes but removing the bike diversion traffic would lessen the amount of cars in that same area.

Their other objections are a bit hypocritical as I've seen plenty of food delivery drivers in that area.

Do you have insider knowledge? Based on DeeCorp's record, I would doubt that it's definitely going ahead, unless they have a deep pocketed partner.

It's the West End. It'll never not be a logjam.

It seems hypocritical for them to complain when there already was a hotel there (albeit a smaller one).

I've seen a lot of tourist videos on YouTube and most of them are staying in Air BnB's downtown, aren't these "illegal"?

Not if they are registered and follow other regulations.

Here's a crazy idea, what of they actually use the streetcar right of way for streetcars?

As a temporary thing for FIFA sure, but this is too good of an existing asset not to use for its intended purpose.

"But after the City of Vancouver’s real estate department offered Dikmans only a two-year lease, he said the project on the False Creek South railway right-of-way was no longer financially viable due to the heavy infrastructure investments required."

They were offered a two year lease already? Wild.

B.C.’s crackdown on short-term rentals has already reduced the number of Airbnb-style listings available in Vancouver.

Dee says unless temporary flexibility is introduced, the by-the-book enforcement could leave thousands of visitors scrambling for alternatives.

“It just makes sense … a one-time event for several weeks. [The province] just needs to make a rule for it — a provision.”

Quote:
Dee stresses the World Cup is exposing a larger, long-standing problem: Vancouver needs 10,000 new hotel rooms by 2030 to keep pace with demand, yet almost no major projects are moving forward.

“The cost of building a hotel is a factor for sure. But then there’s just the overall uncertainty about it. And, when things are uncertain…when you’re in the dark…you stop moving.”

He also believes the federal budget missed an opportunity to treat hotels as infrastructure, calling for incentives to speed up construction and attract investment.

“Vancouver is incredibly well-positioned for global events and tourism. Except we’re short on hotels,” he said.

“We want to tell the world: come here, we have room for you.”

We're also short on housing. Sorry, residents are more important than tourists.

I don't think it's a coincidence that an increase of hotel projects started around the time we banned Airbnb. It'll be short term pain, but we will start to see some more hotel projects being built hopefully.

But the odds there will be a short-term waiver for FIFA is high.

If we're short on hotels why are we spending hundreds of millions bringing FIFA to Vancouver during tourist season?

In other hotel news, Synvest's conversion of the Arts and Crafts building on Seymour is well underway. It will have 73 rooms, and operate as the Arts and Crafts Hotel, part of the Trademark Collection by Wyndham. Opening Q3 2026, so after the World Cup.

Does anyone know what’s going on with the Sonder properties in Vancouver. I guess it’s the old Sunset Inn on Burnaby and part of the old Coast Plaza? Are they just sitting empty?

Robert Blood, founder and chair at hospitality company Lark, said he is currently pursuing negotiations for Sonder units in the Vancouver area and has reached out to some property owners in Toronto and Montreal.

Similarly to Kasa, Lark offers third-party hotel management with independently branded properties. It operates about 75 properties across North America.

Mr. Blood’s team is also looking to re-employ former Sonder staff.

Lark has already transitioned one Sonder property in Cambridge, Mass., since the company’s collapse, and had earlier done so with a property in Mexico City.

But locating and connecting with owners amid bankruptcy proceedings has been a challenge, said Mr. Blood.
