I went by the closed Pasta Prima today. (It closed maybe 4 weeks ago.) Judging by the dumpsters and what little we saw through the window driving past, it appears they are gutting the place. Anyone know what the next incarnation of this building on South Albert will be?

I heard a piano bar...don't know how much truth there is to that. Not even sure where I heard it, haha.

Apparently Beak's Chicken is looking to open a permanent restaurant downtown. Anyone know where? Just saw this on Regina Downtown Facebook page.

Here's a bit more info from the kick-starter site, doesn't say location though, you could post something on their Facebook page and hope for an answer.

Hi to everyone and thanks for checking out my project. My name is Paul Rogers, I am a trained chef and food truck owner. I have my culinary diploma from NAIT in Edmonton, AB. Canada. I have been in the food industry for the past 10 years or so in Edmonton, Vancouver, Copenhagen, Regina and recently Charleston, and I have been running a food truck for the past 3 years. I am married to Jodi and I have 2 kids Alida (5 yrs.) and Heston (3 yrs.) I am wanting to expand my food truck business and open a restaurant of about 30 seats. I have just recently found a perfect location to operate my food truck and run my restaurant out of. I am looking to raise $6000 to secure the space with first and last months lease payments. From there I can start the process of renovating. I really need some support in getting this project started and I look forward to cooking for you!

All the Superstore talk is interesting considering that the latest rumor is that Loblaws is planning to go into the old Canadian Tire as well.

Well the customer I was dealing with is a manager now he did say it was not 100 precent for sure thing. He was actually very surprised that I heard this and wanted to know who told me so I just said I heard it on here.

Some parking is left remaining as well.

Looks reasonable but leaves almost no parking. That lot is nearly full most weekdays as it is...which is surprising in that its one of the worst malls in the city IMO...

They would have to build parking underground most likely but that would be extremely expensive!

That would be an even more cramped site for parking although it has a basement that could be converted to parking.

Maybe they'll buy and tear down the half-built hotel across the street to make a parking lot and make a pedestrian bridge for their shoppers, haha.

Hey, speaking of which, there were guys on site yesterday hanging orange tarps and there appears to be bundles of lumber sitting on the top floor now. Don't know if this means construction is starting again soon or if the site owner just wanted to get a few loose ends tied up before the -40 weather comes.

There was a guy on site on the second floor about a month ago poking around and inspecting in a general kind of way. This is pure conjecture on my part but what I thought it looked like at the time was a contractor poking around to see what kind of mess he was taking on before making a bid.

The owner claims to have financing in play now to finish the job. So it's probably just a matter of time until some sort of work starts up again. But it already started as a cheaply built hotel so I wouldn't expect much either way.

From what I have heard it is unlikely, at least in the near future. I can't remember the details but there was a specific connection between Cactus Club and Saskatoon group that was developing it.

Thanks for the heads up. Depending on the cost, could end up with a pretty interesting change. It's already quite prominent, so if it could be a little more eye-catching, it would take it up a notch.

I'll preface this by saying that I am a HUGE skeptic that a full-scale Superstore is coming to Golden Mile.

This said, turn the superimposed store 90 degrees - have it sit partially behind Gold Plaza & overtake most of the parking lot by Broken Rack. This would have the Superstore's east & west walls in rough alignment with the existing east/west walls of the mall. The store would start roughly where the north wall of the existing Extra is, and continue south basically to Parliament (may be room for some service vehicle/loading docks).

This would also allow the store to convert most of what is now Extra into surface parking.

In the model you created, there are basically two disjointed parking lots - one facing Albert, and one facing Parliament. By twisting the store 90degrees, this essentially creates 1 continuous parking lot facing Albert for Golden Mile/Superstore. This would make a lot more sense to customers (I know I've always found GM's parking to be a bit weird. It would not have the Albert Street frontage Loblaw likely prefers, though.

This said, I still doubt they're planning a full-scale Superstore. Much more likely is a store like some of their Ontario urban infill "Superstores" - e.g. Westboro in Ottawa... much smaller than any Superstore we've seen in the prairies, but carrying the Superstore banner, and more suitable to retrofit/urban design constraints.

CHOP is one of Northland Properties' brands. Other Northlands brands include: Sandman Hotels, Denny's & Moxies (explains why all three of these brands are clumped together on Vic East).

Northland also owns the Shark Club, & Sutton Place hotels.

Yes, there will be a Cactus Club Café opening up in Regina in the future - probably next year. (From a reliable source.)

I heard from an employee at Saskatoon's Cactus Club that it has been brought up a few times in conversation/meetings, and that they have no plans to open one in Regina. I believe their focus next year is to open another in Calgary, Kelowna, and expanding to Ontario.

So...
A) this tells us all to be cautious about rumours from so-called reliable sources. There's no reason to doubt either of the above two reports, other than they are diametrically opposed. One must be wrong.

B) news of new development is interesting, and that's why we're here, after all. Let's just not pine too much for the ones that don't come, when there are so many new establishments as it is, both local and chain.
