It's not like they can't do more than one thing at a time.
To be fair, the cauldron was designed by David Atkins and his Ceremonies team. The first and foremost importance was to create a cauldron design that would work within BC Place and the theatrical show. They didn't come up with the cauldron design until around late-2008/early-2009, and who knows when they decided to put the outdoor cauldron at the VCC.

They wanted to keep it a secret so they started building the outdoor cauldron in the weeks before the Games (happens for every host city).

Now...consider what they've accomplished with the cauldron before the Games began, and what has since been accomplished since the Games ended.

People jump the gun way too often on this forum.

Did anybody else read the sun today? It mentioned that the new sails on Canada Place will initially be beige in colour and will gradually be bleached to white by the sun. Sounds ugly to me I don't see why they don't just use white material in the first place.

It sounds INCREDIBLY ugly....just skimmed over the article, and it doesn't mention when they estimate the sails would be turned white. For all we know it could take years....if it's weeks, fine. Months, no. Years, certainly not!

Argh...yet another thing we may have half-assed...

Beige was on sale!!! And it probably will be at least a year lol And not very uniform at that, as sun exposure will be different, on different parts of the building.

N.Y. firm to make new sails for Canada Place
Quote:
The replacement of the five distinctive white sails on the roof of Canada Place has begun.

Federal Transportation and Infrastructure Minister John Baird said in Vancouver on Wednesday that the retrofit project, announced last year, is part of the federal government's economic plan.

The work is expected to be completed by next March.

The $21-million project, paid for through the government's infrastructure stimulus fund, will be built to the specifications of the original design.

The new sails, made of Teflon-coated fibreglass, are expected to last 30 years.

The construction project started a few days ago and initially involves removing the interior acoustic liner of the roof system and building an internal drainage system to protect the exhibition halls.

While Ledcor Construction Ltd. will manage the overall construction project, the sails will be manufactured by New York-based Birdair, which specializes in such structures.

Baird said the roofing material itself represents about one-quarter of the overall cost of the project.

"Our government is pleased to be part of the roof replacement to this important building, which has become a symbol of culture, tourism and economic activity," Baird said.

"Canada Place is one of the great iconic places in this country."

He said the new roof will provide "increased durability and longevity."

Baird noted that this is the final year of the government's economic plan.

Also attending Wednesday's announcement were Treasury Board president Stockwell Day, who is also minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, and Mike Shardlow, president and CEO of Canada Place Corporation.

Shardlow said the building is a "national icon and a defining feature of the Vancouver skyline."

He said the new sails will initially appear beige in colour, but will gradually be bleached white by the sun. Day said the project will provide 165 direct jobs, plus spinoffs.

Each year, about three million people visit Canada Place, which generates about $1 billion annually to the local economy.

The original sails were erected in 1984. The structure served as the Canada Pavilion during Expo 86.

Canada Place will remain open during the project, although exhibition halls B and C will become a construction zone.

Tenants at Canada Place include Port Metro Vancouver cruise ship terminal and offices, Vancouver Convention Centre's East Building, the Pan Pacific Vancouver, World Trade Center, and Vinci parkade.

I get a kick out of the new technology will enable the fabric to last longer and it's expected to last 30yrs. The old sails were installed in 1984 it's now 2010 so they are 26yrs old and still fully functional although nearing end of life. The new panels don't seem all that special in retrospect.

The security camera looks much better. But it still doesn't make sense to waste the money and manpower to have the "ugly" temporary installation done to last only a few weeks, then dismantled it and relaced with a new installation.

As for the Canada Place roof replacement, the fabic is Teflon-coated, not titanium-coated as I remembered, my bad memory

This project announcement is already the 2nd announment of the same project. Government likes to boast repeatly about good thing...

Nothing happens to the pool bottom surface yet?

I'm not arguing that it's being reroofed, after 26yrs it would need to be very shortly regardless of federal money or not so why not do it. I just think it's silly to brag about the new roof being an improvement, when it will have the same lifespan as the current one.

I dunno...I can't imagine the "temporary" installation costing more than a couple hundred bucks (all the wiring and camera were likely re-used for the permanent installation).

I'd think it better to spend a little to protect against a potentially much more expensive cauldron repair with all the crowds during Canada Day...
