We've been lacking in that department sinceBill and Nada's closed down a few years ago.
That just brought a flood of (mostly good) memories back. Man, I miss that place. And I didn't even realize it until your post. Yeah, there's not really anyplace like that anymore, is there?

Why in Oakley, its just a small town next to the Uinta Mountain range? Just a bunch of Summer homes there. You just have to wonder how someone will make a return on $600,000 in that area.
So the city has all of the old parking meters in storage and is looking at the possibility of repainting and reinstalling them in areas of town that have high pedestrian traffic, so pedestrians can lighten their load by donating their pocket change. If implemented, these meters will have some distinguishing feature (e.g. paint job) so they are identifiable to pedestrians. The money collected will then go to local shelters and charities to help alleviate homelessness, and the amount of panhandling on city streets.

An interesting idea--I wonder if those old parking meters have a nice look to them, or if they're just...blah.
I also have my doubts about the increased $ to shelters and charities doing anything to reduce the amount of panhandling. But that's probably another topic altogether. Anything that would put more money towards those charities is welcome.

If a panhandler were asking you for money, and nearby was one of these old parking meters, which would you give your money to? This sends a clear message to panhandlers. Also the old parking meters have the red and green flags that pop up instead of the electronic ones we have now. The city was thinking of putting stickers on all the green flags so when you put your change in, it would pop up and read "Thank you" or something fun like that. Kids would love it--as much as they love throwing their money into water sculptures and wishing wells.

I know I don't give money to panhandlers. When I lived in Portland, it felt like it was a tollway. Every on-ramp had at least one pan handler who'd stand next to the pacer light while we'd wait to get on the freeway.
Generally, I'd give him something from my lunch if I could spare it, but I'd never give them cash.
I just re-read the thread .... how did we get from a dining car to pan-handling?

Yes.. I am a bit late to the topic, so I'll consolidate my thoughts. I have never seen a China town with a warehouse or strip mall. I hope it can expand quickly to become a destination!
Also, there is a giant Supermarket called "Lee Lee's" In Chandler, AZ that is fantastic. Check it out if you are ever in the area!
^^^ Steve, Although most of us would probably agree that it would be great to see development of that whole area around South Salt Lake's State and Main Streets. I would like to see a lot more on State and also Main continue northward to meet a developing and expanding downtown.
