If implemented, these meters will have some distinguishing feature (e.g. paint job) so they are identifiable to pedestrians. The money collected will then go to local shelters and charities to help alleviate homelessness, and the amount of panhandling on city streets.

I think the addition of a canopy on the first floor, similar to the Walker Center that should be up again soon, will really ad some dimension to the sidewalk level.
Are you talking about the wrap around canopy they just took off, or the original canopy that developers plan to replicate?

An interesting idea--I wonder if those old parking meters have a nice look to them, or if they're just...blah.
I also have my doubts about the increased $ to shelters and charities doing anything to reduce the amount of panhandling. But that's probably another topic altogether. Anything that would put more money towards those charities is welcome.

If a panhandler were asking you for money, and nearby was one of these old parking meters, which would you give your money to? This sends a clear message to panhandlers. Also the old parking meters have the red and green flags that pop up instead of the electronic ones we have now. The city was thinking of putting stickers on all the green flags so when you put your change in, it would pop up and read "Thank you" or something fun like that. Kids would love it--as much as they love throwing their money into water sculptures and wishing wells.

I was thinking of one over the door or the doors because there is multiple tenants on the first floor. Maybe the city need to review the sign ordinance to allow signs to stick off the front of the building again. Maybe there isn't an ordinance limiting signs over sidewalks but it seems to be that way.
I know I don't give money to panhandlers. When I lived in Portland, it felt like it was a tollway. Every on-ramp had at least one pan handler who'd stand next to the pacer light while we'd wait to get on the freeway.
Generally, I'd give him something from my lunch if I could spare it, but I'd never give them cash.
I just re-read the thread .... how did we get from a dining car to pan-handling?

^^^ Steve, Although most of us would probably agree that it would be great to see development of that whole area around South Salt Lake's State and Main Streets. I would like to see a lot more on State and also Main continue northward to meet a developing and expanding downtown.
I think if we're going to have a Chinatown, it should be on Plum Ave where it originally was. I don't get building it in South Salt Lake, since it's not like they have a huge Asian population anyway.
Know this state, it probably means a Panda Express.
