The Traffic Bridge is over 100 years old and is in the centre of the city. It has nothing to do with Circle Drive South.

And secure funding before they start what? The bridge had to be closed because it was unsafe. It's sat unused for over a year now. The article is about the city weighing some options, before funding is in place to replace the old bridge, not build an additional bridge.

The bridges and river valley make up a huge part of Saskatoon's identity. I'll take that over a man made pond any day. To each their own.

Not sure where I was "hating" in that post.

Yes. The bridges are indeed expensive to build and maintain.

I lived in Saskatoon for a short time (1986-87), on Victoria Avenue just up from the Traffic Bridge in the hi-rise that was then known as Sahali Kort (which has since been converted to condos and re-named). I loved the character of the old bridge, but it was a bit too narrow for today's larger cars and trucks. I always crossed it hoping the oncoming traffic stayed on their side of the line! By the way, the bridge was shut down for several months during the time that I lived there because a City street sweeper had partially broken through the roadway. The company I worked for at that time (Dominion Bridge) evaluated the bridge and a number of steel beams were added to the underside. I hope it gets replaced with a modern bridge but with a similar period look. The City just needs to find some money. Hmm... Remai Traffic Bridge?

Thanks for the info, Kruzat. Not the most exciting tenants going in to there, but it's better than the space sitting empty.

The City of Saskatoon's population estimate for Dec. 31, 2011 is in: 234,200.

That's up from the June 30 estimate of 231,900.

Saskatoon drawing newcomers away from bigger cities

Immigrants looking to start a new life filled with prosperity and opportunity are packing their bags and heading in droves to… Saskatoon?
While provinces like Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia have long attracted the majority of incoming Canadians, a report by the Globe and Mail suggests the Prairie city, with its reputation for welcoming new residents and its numerous employment opportunities, has become an increasingly attractive place for migrant workers to settle.
"My friends live here, they said it's a good place — for living, for job opportunities…That's why I chose Saskatoon," Bangladeshi native Sayful Ahmed told the paper about his decision to move there three weeks ago. "So far, so good."
A recent Statistics Canada survey, released Tuesday, shows Saskatchewan and Alberta have edged to the top of the population growth chart. Saskatchewan not only demonstrated the highest level of international migration in the third quarter of 2011, it also showed the highest growth level of any quarter since 1971.
"Settlement patterns in contemporary Canada are changing. Western Canada is increasingly vibrant economically and Saskatchewan, we think, is helping to drive that kind of shift," said Immigration Minister Rob Norris. "It's allowing us to fuel our economic growth…We're seeing community renewal under way and we're also seeing economic benefits."
A bit further east, migration levels in Ontario clocked in at their lowest level since 1998, as the country's most populous province has seen unemployment rates sail past the national average.
The downturn has hit newcomers especially hard. A 2010 Board of Trade report states that, compared to their Canadian co-workers, Toronto immigrants are earning less now than they did in 1980. The report added that the failure to properly utilize their skills is arguably costing the Canadian economy billions.
As economic opportunities grow in the other direction, Western provinces are luring skilled workers — both Canadian and international-born — to seek their fortunes in a burgeoning market.
In fact, many of Ahmed's new acquaintances have recently settled in Saskatchewan after first testing the waters elsewhere.
"All the Bengalis I meet here… they either come from Toronto or Montreal," he said.
Part of this shift stems from the way Western provinces are choosing who comes through their borders. Instead of relying on the "points system," a selection process that often brings in highly educated surgeons and engineers who later find themselves facing unemployment, places like Saskatchewan and Alberta are making an effort to hand-pick workers who will fulfill a particular economic need.
The gamble appears to be paying off. In the past year, Ottawa has dipped into immigrant-relocation resources earmarked for Ontario, and reallocated some of those funds to the trio of provinces on the left side of the map.

Sad to hear the rumours confirmed that this old house will be lost. If it's any consolation, Tim Ryan is an experienced builder who has done some nice infill in this city. The condos could be a nice addition to Queen Street, but it is a sad loss nonetheless.

Plan to Save City Park House Scuttled
Developer says home 'a mess'

By Jason Warick, The StarPhoenix December 26, 2011

Quote:
Plans to preserve a 99-year-old City Park house by moving it off the site of a proposed condominium development have been scrapped after its oak interior was pilfered.

The house will now likely be demolished, owner Tim Ryan says.

"It's become quite a mess. (Saving the house) is a pretty remote possibility now," said Ryan, a developer who purchased the property at 802 Queen St. at the beginning of November.

The large house sits on a 19,000-square-foot lot roughly four times the size of the average residential property, Ryan said.

It was built in 1912 by William (Billy) Silverwood, according to the City Park local area plan. An addition was made in the 1940s. For years, it was owned by the Salvation Army as a home for troubled youth known as Bethany Home. A group recently made an unsuccessful attempt to purchase the property and use it as a hospice, as Saskatoon City Hospital sits across the street.

When the building went up for sale by public tender this fall, Ryan bought it.

He was impressed by the excellent condition of the interior oak doors, banisters and other fixtures.

"It just needed some light sanding and a coat of lacquer and it would have been perfect," Ryan said.

Ryan plans to build an 18unit high-end condominium complex on the site, as it's in a prime location close to downtown, the riverbank and just a block from Kinsmen Park.

"We're not going to cheap out. This will be a prime property," he said.

^^^ A very sad loss, but if its beyond repair and being able to be saved then I guess I understand their reasoning. As you mentioned, hopefully he is able to redevelop it nicely.

Another case of demolition by neglect. Our city is so young and when we lose heritage buildings, we lose a piece of our identity. I hope they charge that woman and her moving crew with theft.

I don't know the developer, so I don't intend to cast aspersions, but if you regularly read the Winnipeg forum, it seems this is a typical tactic by developers who wish to demolish rather than restore. "Invite" some sort of damage to the building (e.g. water damage, vandalism etc.) which renders it impractical to save and then go to the city for variances allowing what you intended to do all along.

Also, while I agree with that infill is vital for the city, I also resent the implication by the developer that people against his particular plan are being nimbys gainst density. I believe I have mentioned in the past that City Park is the densest neighborhood in the city, and while I don't object to more infill there, like halfway houses, low income housing etc, infill needs to be distributed equally between neighborhoods. Try to get zoning variance to build an apartment in Errindale. You can't simply cram everything no-one else wants into the "inner city". This condo development better be good, or you are really gonna hear some bitchin!

The Dresser has relocated to 245 3rd Ave S., further solidifying downtown as the destination for haberdashery.
