It does seem slow going. Could be they're working only on the inside now. The last photos taken were by Luke Garrott in the middle of October. The difference with Paniolo Man's photo is the visible plastic hanging on the south wing, which would make sense that progress is proceeding on the inside during the winter weather.

The City Council website for the 754 State rezone has been updated to state that "Intermountain Health has requested additional time" and that "A vote will be held at a future meeting."

I confess to being a little peeved at how long it is taking for anything to happen in regards to this project.

I'm way more peeved that they still haven't shown the public or the City Council anything from the project.

I think they thought they would just get a quick rubber stamp of approval even when they provided no plans to the City (making me think either they have no real concrete plans yet, or their plans are trash and they know it).

Now that the City Council is requesting to know actual details for the project, its almost like IHC was caught off guard.

To me, I'm okay if they are taking this long because they are actually working on the project to make it good enough to present to the City Council.

I doubt they have anything like a design or a site plan yet. I imagine they have square footages only and they probably don't even have that stacked on the site as a program massing. And that should be fine as far as I'm concerned. I can't speak for the city, but an urban hospital will be fantastic for the city and for that area. It's a great extension to downtown. And it will spur development all around it, including the Granary.

As far as the site plan and what the city wants for the site, they can negotiate that during the entitlement process. I'm not a land law expert, but if they can, and the city is still reluctant to give the upzone, maybe they can create an overlay district over that block that says an urban hospital on this site can have the D-1 zoning benefits along with the allowed use for hospital and ambulance. Then when the entitlements go through, just get rid of the overlay district and make it D-1.

Aside from all that, I want that Avenues land to open up for redevelopment and I want to see a bunch of townhouses go up. That's what I'm really excited about. The worst case scenario is the city screws this up, the Avenues hospital stays and they expand services somewhere else downtown, and Sears Lake becomes some protected habitat.

Agree Bob. It would be great though if we had some sort of rendering ideas, even if only preliminary. Kind of like the MLB/Power Station Project, a little tidbit here and there.

Probably but something seems fishy. They're clearly in no hurry to move this thing ahead.

The planning and logistics of building and transferring hospitals is complicated and time consuming. I am not surprised it is taking this long. I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't see plans until next year.

A rendering of what? Their excel spreadsheet of program square feet? That boxed and stacked on the site? That would kill their chances more than anything since so many city stakeholders seem most interested in how the building responds to the site. They're not going to have that until they award the project to an architect. And they can't do that until they have a project to award. Intermountain might be able to convince an architect to put in a bunch of free work to help them navigate the preliminaries of entitlement, but do you really expect them to throw together a rendering in some vain attempt to rationally represent the complexity of a 300 million dollar hospital replacement? I don't understand why people want them to treat this so casually just so everyone can see a rendering that won't in any way represent the final product.

Since the thread has been dead lately, here is an idea. Since the pipeline from the ocean to the salt lake has been deemed to be quite a difficult and expensive idea. What if we just a built a far shorter pipeline that had far less elevation gain.

The Snake River at Raft River, Idaho is about 59 miles from the north arm of the Great Salt Lake. This is the arm of the lake that is in the most danger of drying up. The Snake really is a great American river and it drains a good portion of one of the most plentiful watersheds in the country in the greater Yellowstone Basin. It also sends a ton of water downstream to the Columbia and into thw ocean every year. I wonder if a deal could be reached with Idaho to allow some diversion during high water years to rescue the lake. This seems far more practical to me than a 750 miles pipeline.

That seems much more logical and practical to me. There is allot of water in that system. The biggest challenge would probably be political. If we couldn't get Idaho to okay that, maybe we could divert water from the Columbia River itself? That is the largest river west of the Rockies and the population it supports isn't nearly as large as what the Colorado basin supports.
