That's not to say it was a good December for pollution. According to the EPA, in terms of worst measured daily PM2.5 concentration at stations across the city, this December saw the fewest green air days since 2017. But, since 1999, it was one of only 4 Decembers to not see an orange or red air day (though New Years Day was an orange day), and it is tied for the 12th most green air days (out of 25). So there is probably some recency bias going on here.

That summer just a couple years ago when there were all the fires along the west coast. At the time I lived less than a mile from the mountains in Logan and I went most of the summer not able to see them from my house. We had more bad air days than good air days that year. Closest I have ever come to leaving Utah for good.
These last few weeks haven't been great, I ended up spending new years out in the Nevada desert because I wanted to start 2024 with functional lungs.
Of course as cleaner cars and increased transit become more common the air will improve, however the best short-term solutions involve making industrial polluters install costly emissions controls on their facilities. US Magnesium, Oil Refineries, and Kennecott are all significant contributors to our bad air. They should have to factor the social cost of emissions into their operations.
Geneva Steel shut down when I was too young to understand what was going on, though I understand that Utah County saw it's largest air quality improvement in modern history upon it's shutdown. The rest of Utah (and the west in general) will see a significant reduction in summer haze once Utah's 4 largest coal plants shut down/switch to cleaner fuel.
