SANDY - The Sandy City Council is slated to approve a $5 million purchase of the land that was once planned for a Broadway-style theater.

Plans for the 40-story, 600-foot Proscenium towers have been scrapped for now due to the developer's funding drying up, said Sandy spokeswoman Trina Duerkson. But a theater, apartments, condominiums or commercial development could still be on the horizon.

"Because of the market, it's kind of a different scenario out there now," Duerkson said. "It could be a completely different project than what was first approved."

While most Sandy haters would find this as great news. As for the state of Utah and the whole Salt Lake metro I find this as bad news. With our luck all we will got on that sit now are more lame 5-6 story buildings.
It would be nice if the state of Utah can join the other states when it comes with having a icon skyscraper taller then 30-stories, not just having boring 20-story box buildings as our tallest. Damn economy. The poor economy also cost us the Zion Social Hall Center Towers back in 2002 that would of been a 34-story office building in downtown Salt Lake. Like I said it would be nice to have a kick ass skyscraper in our state so that way people don't think that Salt Lake and Utah with having boring boxy short buildings.

Yet, this is the same in other major cities across the nation. Many of the high rise structures that have been built in cities across the country may have been built or already started but they are dead as doornails in regard of drawing potential tenants.

In this case, if you build it, they will come does not apply. When things turn around, there will be a serious constuction run. SLC will be one of the cities to see this and the skyline will benefit.

I see the Citycreek construction as an intelligent win win situation. A great and well planned start to run of construction that will follow in a year or two.

Great skylines are totally nice but great cities are what matters.

condo building in Draper

Welcome back Projects!

I just found this proposed condo building for Draper. It's probably dead or on hold like most others.

I am in no way shape or form a fan of the economy right now, but I have to say, I'm not too sad about this project being scrapped because of it.

Yeah, I didn't like to project as it was envisioned and would have voted against it if I was on the city council. I think they have an opportunity to still create density and walkability that will not detract from other parts of the valley. I look forward to what emerges.

So true....Thank goodness we're not in the same situation as many areas of Florida or Vegas where entire massive complexes and or towers sit empty.

Proscenium thoughts, Draper apartment and In and Out

Thanks

While alot of people were not fans of the "Proscenium" project I still would like to see something built there on the site. Maybe 40-story towers were a bit too much of a bite for Sandy City, but to have a tower or two of around 15-20 stories to start out wouldn't be too bad. I still liked the idea of having some kind of a mix use development in that area. Something walkable with shops, offices and homes would be great. I can't wait to see what the city has planned for that land. Here's hoping that the city will do something smart with that area.

As for Draper I like that rendering of the apartments. Hey Orlando do you know where this project is at? It kind of looks like it's somewhere near the foothills. It looks like the Condo building has retail space on the main level with parking under the building. ( That's the way to do it. Thumbs up for me. )

Also has any one notice the new In and Outs going up right now? There's one in Draper just off of the freeway and 12600 South near the flying J. And there's another one ( Two story ) In and Out going up right now on the South-West corner of the Jordan Landing in West Jordan. At both sites the wood frames are up. Can't wait for these to open. Not long now. Maybe just another two months to wait.

For all those of us that continually say we prefer the local eateries over the national chains, lets all step up to the challenge and help support a local Gem. I haven't been there in years and miss the University location but Gepetto's really is a great place to eat, with great food at a great price.

Supporters rally to save Gepetto's in Holladay

GDP Study

Here's an interesting article I found when browsing the Denver threads: It's the GDP for all metro areas, released by the U.S Department of Commerce, for 2009.

Utah Metros:

Salt Lake City: 62.5 Billion #44
Ogden: 16.5 Billion #118
Provo: 13.7 Billion #138
St. George: 3.4 Billion #338
Logan: 3.1 Billion #347

Salt Lake is in between Richmond, VA (45) and Memphis, TN (43).

Gee, I didn't know Gepetto's was that close to the edge. Cafe Normandie (err, Normandie Cafe?) relocated before the east section of Murray-Holladay Rd. was blocked off, and their business has been booming ever since. Makes me feel bad for the old pizza place, the last time I went there (a couple months ago) it was abnormally crowded, but even then it was only about half full. You should come, the pizza's still great!

At the very least, I would hope that the thousands of people in the immediate area will get this news and make a point of stopping by or at least ordering to go.
