I know this was done by Perkins & Will out of Chicago, which might be why they are proposing something that seems dramatically so much more urban.
The height limits in the area ended up costing the city a big anchor tenant tech company (Galileo) back in 2019/2020, so the general feeling has been that this area should be significantly upzoned. I tend to agree since this is supposed to be the central station of the entire transit network.

Hiring a firm from Chicago, and increasing competition from The Point and "Utah City", probably helped too.

I just hope the city can get the wheels actually turning on this. Getting the University of Utah back onboard would help a lot. The Rio Grande Plan would help too but that sorta goes without saying.

The 5 over 2s are probably exactly what's going to happen. After about 5-6 years.

Ironically, the RGP is exactly what needs to happen to get something cool on that site. Freeing up all that real estate, removing the tracks and making the Rio Grande depot a functional building again will do more to make that area attractive than anything else they will probably try to do.

Miscellaneous photos from today.

It was great to see the turnout at the Rio Grande Plan event!

Here are a few photos I snagged over the course of today:

Honestly, that could be pretty nice, too. But we won’t even get that.

If it looked anything like that would be amazing.

Oh my, that "Sea Can" building is just awful. Looks like it belongs next to those Soviet concrete, bunker buildings from 1960. Shocked, something like that was approved. Yuck.

Station Center has already been upzoned to 180 feet, right?

Still, they should definitely allow higher in that whole area.

On another note, I haven't seen anyone mention this yet, but the Planning Commission denied the project that replaced the Moda Luxe. For those who may not remember, it was proposed to cap out under the 100' minimum for D-1 zoning. This shows me that they may be learning from the travesty that is The Randi just to the north of it.

Not to mention the fact that it has been sitting in roughly the same state of incompleteness for a couple years now.

I'm starting to wonder if it would be better to condemn the building and build something better at this site. Hopefully we have now learned this type of construction is idiotic and that we shouldn't try it again.

The apartments.com listing for The Revival indicates a Feb 1, 2024 lease availability. Obviously this can change, but it gives a rough idea of 'completion.'

Plus, the official website for The Revival also states, "Apply Today For February 2024 Move-In!" So I think February completion seems likely.

I'm OK with one, and only one, of these types of buildings in the city, but it definitely should be the first and last of its kind.

i would bet that most of them are locals who were born here. Incredibly closed minded and backward. It's really obnoxious.
