I think others have proposed this idea recently, but the church clearly plans to "vaticanize" that part of town in the future. That block combined with the underutilized ones surrounding it will probably be a combination of an expansion of Ensign College/BYU Salt Lake and church-related structures/plazas/parks. The church won't allow a sports arena there. It's too loud and secular for their plans.

I'd love if the power district accommodated all our professional sports. If the Delta Center were torn down I would really love if they incorporated some kind of plaza in the center of the block (not bordering any streets). Any tall structures could land on the north side of the plaza with heights limited to the east south and west for sunlight reasons. It would be cool if the county offices were moved downtown and the old county offices site near 2100 South were redeveloped. Perhaps the Delta Center block could be used for that. Not sure if that would be a good idea at all.

It is hard to see from a mere photo, but restoration work is clearly underway at the Rio Grande Depot. There's equipment, roll-off dumpsters, and a full bank of porta-johns. Hopefully they do tours upon completion of the repair/restoration.

I disagree that a street allowing cars is designed to fail for other users. People aren't getting hit by cars on Regent Street. I've used my car on that street many times, usually for a quick pick up/drop off. It's far less stressful and more convenient than meeting someone on one of the main roads. It's designed in a way that drivers feel the need to be cautious and drive slowly. I would design 300 S at "Station Center" in a similar way. The most urban cities in the world have car traffic everywhere. It hardly kills the walkability, as long as there is ample room for pedestrians. With our streets, we aren't about to run out of room.

Yeah, I find BSLs argument to be a little too idealistic. I get what they are saying but in reality, there aren't going to be many 100% car free streets in the city.

Cars are not going away, and they have a place in the modern city. We should reclaim a great deal of land from bad land use and improve pedestrian safety and comfort, but to go full "anti-car for all" is dumb and unproductive if you ask me.

The state is spending much more than this at The Point for utilities and such. Seems doable to ask for some or all of that $60 million from the state for this too, for exactly the same reasons.

But there's definitely some major favoritism going on at The Point, so who knows.

What happened from a few years ago where they shot down 12-story buildings in that area to now this super urbanized couple blocks? Why are they now allowing for 40-story buildings here? Anybody know why they changed their form appetite so dramatically? I know this was done by Perkins & Will out of Chicago, which might be why they are proposing something that seems so much more urban.
