I can still see 4 Koch Erecting Corp Kangaroos on each building lifting 3 story sections of curtain wall higher and higher into the sky. It seemed every week they got higher and higher. In 1972,I believe Do It Again by Steely Dan had just come out and for some reason whenever i hear that song,i think of the 2 behemoths that were built just across the river within view of the school. To this day when i hear that song it transports me right back to my desk next to the window and once again i see the construction activity. It brings an inward smile and yet an air of sadness at the same time for me. I suppose you could say i almost feel like i lost a part of my childhood when they came down. I know it all might sound weird to you but they were indelibly burned into my psyche for some odd reason, almost as if they were family members. I can remember when we would go to my grandparents house in Brooklyn,i would always beg my father to take the West Side Highway so we could go right by them and i remember always craning my neck to look at them as we'd drive by. I can remember many times going down the NJ Turnpike in the late afternoon/early evening and watching them as the setting sun would turn them into towers of gold as the light played off the aluminum exterior panels. I finally got a chance to visit them in 1988 live and in person and can remember that the first thing i did was walk right up to them and look straight up the side.........almost as if i was meeting a superhero i idolized as a child. For me they were,i guess you could say,a part of me for some reason. I can remember walking into the massive lobby and marveling in its size and beauty and finally being able to see,up close what had kept my attention in school all those years before. The view from the rooftop was,in my opinion about as close to heaven as you could get without actually having to confront St Peter. While i do think the new 1WTC is and will be beautiful, the mystique Nelson and david held for me will never be matched. I will always have my memories of those two beautiful yet simple structures that looked amazing to me,no matter what time of the day i'd happen to see them. Would i have liked to see them re-built?? Absolutely!!.............even taller. Would i have been afraid to go inside them?? Nope......no reason to fear old friends. Anyhow i just wanted to add my .02 on the subject of Nelson and David. Sorry if i,as well was a bit off topic. Thanks for listening. Oh by the way i certainly hope this page continues right up until they pull the last crane off the roof of the new 1WTC............as long as ive been in construction as a pipefitter, ive never seen how it's done and it would be interesting to see how they actually get the last one off the roof. Take care............Tom

Sorry to copy and paste your entire text but every word were worth it.
I was not born in NYC, not even in the US but I did visit this city when I was a child. I felt in love with the Twins towers the first time I saw them on my way from Newark's airport to NYC. It was the sunset on a clear blue sky, at the beginning, from the bus, you could only see the top of them and then, suddenly, they appeared as two huge giants made of pure gold.
From this time, they have always meant to me that the human being had no limit, like a dream comes true.
When I went back home, I dreamt of my trip, bought as much books as I could about the city and its two sentinels. But I had to be sure it was not only a dream so I came back (many times) and I always felt the same whenever I saw them. I felt comfortable.
Even if the idea was attractive, I don't think it would have been a good idea to rebuild them, for we can not live in the past. After what happened, one has to be honest, something different had to be built.
However I do feel that what they represented to us will be missed forever.
Thank you Tom for your post.
