Here's a timelapse driving video I made showing ongoing construction of the Highway 401 extension in Windsor:

This is an update on Cottagers' Cut near Wakefield PQ. They have a round-a-bout and everything.

Looks like the Hurontario construction is coming along nicely. I'm planning to drive through that this weekend.

Construction seems to be progressing quite quickly. More quickly than I had anticipated. I took photos from all three overpasses, but I haven't had the chance to edit or upload them yet.

I use an Olympus Pen Camera. It does 720p well but the problem is it stops recording every 7 mins or so as it can only store 2GB files at a time. Thus you have to restart it when it finishes... Causes those blurbs of missing footage in the video when you stitch them together.

Video was sped up 4x. I find that's the best timeframe because you're still able to see the interesting parts and fly by otherwise boring sections.

With all the prep work that's been taking place since 2010, the time's come to just get the thing done. I would expect the work this year is mostly straightforward compared to past years as well.

Is there a contract yet for the next phase of the project? (Widening to Credit River... Phase 2 of 3 right?)

I visited the site in the middle of April and at that time it didn't look like construction had really even mobilized for the summer season, so I was surprised at how much work had been done in just over two weeks since my last visit. The work is fairly straight forward for now though. Who knows if I am right, but I am guessing by the end of June/start of July, some traffic will be using the new express lanes, though likely not quite in final configuration.

I have uploaded the rest of my pictures from Monday:

Went down the divided section of hwy 69 south of Sudbury and saw the sign saying that the next segment won't be done until 2016 and it's only 16km and a great bit of work has already been completed. After this the hwy will be divided from Sudbury to almost the French River. Still has almost 100km left to twin until it's connected to hwy 400 just north of Parry Sound.

A Sunday drive in suburbia...

The disgusting disaster that is Kenmount Road, formerly the Trans Canada Highway, now the main road linking suburban St. John's to the suburban City of Mount Pearl as well as the Town of Paradise. Even on a lazy Sunday, it is infuriating.

The speed limit is 50. Most people do 80.

A significant percentage of the traffic on this street is made up of drivers coming in from villages that don't have a single street light to go to the Avalon Mall. They stay in the left lane the entire length of Kenmount Road because they know they have to turn left at the end of it.

It's also a strip that "Alberta trucks" tend to use, young guys heading out around the bay to go parking or whatever.

And the rest is composed of commuters.

Just thinking about Kenmount Road gives me road rage. If I know I have to drive it, I'm in a bad mood before and after.

Now thats how you build a highway

A ground layer of asphalt and then a layer of concrete on top

BC could learn a thing or two about building highways from Ontario. We have a serious issue out here with leveling our highways. They're plagued by bumps and dips from the ground settling.

Looking at that video, I would argue it should be 60 km/h for the first section (up to the freeway in the video), and 70 km/h for the rest to the turn.

Sounds good to me! It does change to 60 at some point and continues as such to the turn. But I don't know exactly where.

Same as Quebec ...

We could learn alot about ontario, indeed.

Oh cool timelapse of St. Johns! I really like the housing styles there.

Here's another timelapse driving video that I made over the weekend: this time showing the 401 through Mississauga and part of Toronto. The Hurontario widening can be seen as well as the world's busiest segment of highway.

That looks like a lot of fun to drive. The exits are very well done. Ours generally have much sharper turns.

The only houses you see are actually in the neighbouring city of Mount Pearl. St. John's has some areas like that within its borders, but most of the city looks like this video.

This shows the route from Signal Hill to Barter's Hill and includes about half (the main half) of Water Street, our main downtown drag...

Taken the same lazy Sunday as the above video.
