That's incredible. If I'm lucky, I'll be driving down there this coming summer.

True, but to be like Winnipeg's, the main streets downtown would have to be numbered as well. Ottawa's sound more like rural roads that come into the city and retain some sort of county route numbering. Winnipeg's was an urban system designed to remove confusion as numerous streets were cobbled together to form arterials after the war. This results in arterials with up to six or seven different names, in some cases, thus the numbering which is easier for truckers etc. to make sense of. For example, "Route 62" is successively Dakota Street, Dunkirk Drive, Osborne Street, Memorial Boulevard, Colony Street, Balmoral Street, Isabel Street and finally, after crossing the tracks into the North End, Salter Street. It's all one road now but wasn't originally.

Autoroute 5 north of Ottawa, extension under construction. The existing route 105 runs parallel to it.

5 Will pretty much be a parallel to Highway 417, correct?

I have one more video to share with you guys. A (fast) timelapse drive on the 401 west of Tilbury showing the 6 lane cross-section and all those windmills.

Now when are they goona start working on the stretch towards London? I hate it when trucks are passing eachother and a huge que forms behind them.

It is actually perpendicular to the 417. The A-5 goes north from the border between Ottawa and Gatineau towards Maniwaki.

You are thinking of the east-west A-50, which was recently completed and is basically parallel to the 417, but on the north side of the Ottawa River.

I believe the A-5 extension will be full freeway rather than a super 2.

Yep - I love video's like this - even for roads I'll likely never take. I love good transportation systems no matter where they are.

Thanks!

That's fantastic - still can't believe 41% bought into that proposal. But it's dead, dead, dead.

Let's see if I can figure this out...

"roads" forum in "skyscraper" page. Pavement are being Skyscrapers? Even when there's no pavement yet? And my pilot's comments are bad enough when I shoot cranes. He'll have a stroke if he catches me deliberately shooting roads. He does seem to like dams, though.

Hwy 427, Ontario

Over the past few years, work has been ongoing to rehabilitate Hwy 427 in Toronto. Hwy 427 lies on the western leg of the city of Toronto and was generally widened to a twelve lane highway during the early 1970s.

Some photos:

1. Most freeways built during the 1960s and 1970s in Toronto looked very much like this. They were generally surfaced in concrete, featured steel barriers and were lit with conventional mast lighting. This photo dates from 2004.

2. In 2004, and 2005, MTO began a multi-year construction project to replace the central steel barrier with a concrete barrier, and upgrade the lighting from conventional mast to high mast.

3. Between 2007 and 2010, MTO proceeded to repair and rehabilitate both the southbound and northbound express lanes of the 427. By this time, the concrete driving surface was about 35 years old and had signs of wear. Slab replacements were made, and the concrete was overlaid with asphalt.

4. Construction was carefully staged. Notice the future overhead sign support footings that have been poured in the median. New signs won't be installed until the median between the collector and express lanes is replaced and modernized.

5. One of the features that sets the 427 apart from other GTA area freeways is its integration with the local road network. There are several similar slip ramps such as this one to Valhalla Road between the QEW and 401.

6. With work on the express lanes completed, work started to rehabilitate and resurface both the northbound and southbound collector lanes. This photo shows subsurface work beneath the core to collector median.

7. Here, a large rubber tired excavator places granular material in the space within the median between the northbound collector and express lanes. A rubber tire excavator is used here, as a steel track machine could damage the highway's pavement.

8. Somewhat unique to the 427 is this segmented pre-cast concrete barrier that has been placed between the southbound express and collector lanes. Typically, freeway barriers are cast in place.

Work to rehabilitate the 427 is ongoing as of this post, with the current collector lane contracts wrapping up in 2013 and 2014.

Ministry chooses new highway route to QEW

http://www.thespec.com/news/ontario/article/878005--ministry-chooses-new-highway-route-to-qew

It’s being called a major step toward what could eventually be a new highway in southern Niagara, one that itself could end up being the first phase of the long-discussed mid-peninsula highway linking Niagara to the Greater Toronto Area.

After years of work on the idea of what’s often called the east-west corridor — a highway linking Highway 140 to the QEW in the south end of Niagara — Ontario Ministry of Transportation staff have selected their preferred corridor out of five different options being mulled.

Ken Brothers, commissioner of public works for the Region, told regional politicians at a meeting on Tuesday that the ministry’s preferred corridor is in the area roughly between Netherby Road and Bowen Road, which would be roughly from the Welland area to Fort Erie. Now that the preferred corridor has been chosen, the next step is to identify a more detailed route — a step that Brothers said could take a year — then eventually the land acquisition and detailed design phases.

The east-west highway is seen by regional politicians as important to promote what’s known as gateway economic areas in the southern tier of Niagara, which the Region wants to see grow in the years to come.

But with the province planning on widening the QEW between Hamilton and St. Catharines from six lanes to eight lanes to handle what’s expected to be a crush of congestion in the years to come, some regional politicians were asking Tuesday if the east-west highway would in essence be competing with the QEW widening for limited provincial dollars.

Brothers said he sees the two projects a complementary.

Last July, John Slobodzian, a project co-ordinator with the ministry, said even an eight-lane QEW might find itself overwhelmed with traffic within 20 years. That will require another major project, possibly a new freeway in southern Niagara, Slobodzian and a ministry consultant said.

St. Catharines Coun. Andy Petrowski asked Brothers what his most optimistic estimate on how soon the new highway could become a reality.

Brothers said a highway project that could cost billions of dollars typically takes about 10 years. Petrowski said that could push the proposed new highway, which he called critical with Highway 406 now being widening to four lanes from Port Robinson Road to East Main Street in Welland, far down the road.

“It sounds like a project my grandchildren will have to worry about,” he said.

But Brothers said senior staff with the Region are working hand-in-hand with their counterparts from the City of Hamilton and Waterloo, Peel and Halton regions to reach consensus on major transportation priorities such as the south Niagara highway, to bend the ear of the province. “It’s a collaboration we think is powerful,” “he said.

Brothers said a top priority will be getting the south Niagara highway on the ministry’s five-year construction plan to fast-track it by stressing its importance to economic development.

“It will be our job to assure this stays on the front burner,” he said.
