'Tis a shame that the plan was never executed. That would have been something.

Sure take away the miles and miles of paved biked paths, most of the federal institutions and the green belt and maybe you'll have your typical mid sized city, but whether you want to acknowledge it or not extra money,(your tax dollars) does get pumped into the city to keep it more beautiful and manicured then the average mid sized city. The above average number of federally operated city Parks, cycling paths, and that canal skateway thing aren't cheap to maintain . Because of it being the capital, Ottawa just has the unfair edge when it comes to funding compared to most similar sized cities. It's strengths aren't in super talls. Whether it underwhelms for being the Capital of a 40m nation, can be debated I suppose, but it certainly can't be defined as a normal cookie cutter typical mid sized city as you put it either. Tourist season would tell you otherwise as well. Because of it being the capital, it's just a little spoiled as far as extra budget $$$ goes. Like it or not, thems the facts Jack!

No.. The few that are are though, are just ignorant/ill informed. They disregard all the stately embassies, Rideau hall, and national museums amongst what I had already mentioned. I mean Madison Wisconsin must have national museums of art, Science and a modern war museum amongst others no?.Ottawa is what it is..While it's certainly no Washington,Moscow, or even Vancouver. it's certainly not "anytown" U.S.A or Ontario either.

Compared to most capitals of its size, the capital-esque stuff is actually just a small part of Ottawa's cityscape. I'd agree that part of the city is pretty nice but if you take that away, I'd say you're left with a somewhat nicer-than-average North American city - with basically no blight, which is a big plus.

The two different Hamilton skylines, taken today from Hamilton and Burlington, along Cootes "Paradise" and the north side of the Harbour.

Yes. I think you summed it up.I'm no Ottawa booster by any stretch, but am not blind to the fact that extra money is pumped into the city to keep it somewhat nicer for dignitaries, international tourists, etc. hence the NCC.It may a little underwhelming for a G7 capital as some would put it, but it's hardly Anywhere U.S.A or ON. It is what it is..Just call it properly, perhaps without Rose coloured glasses, but not with your drink half empty either. I suppose some people come visit for a day or 2, visit Parliament hill, shrug then leave without seeing the other stuff. Grab your mountain bike next time, and take a ride through Gatineau Park. Parlament Hill is maybe 3 hours.

great TO set. the one with the hockey players on a frozen Lake Ontario with Toronto skyscrapers looming belongs on the back of the $5 bill.

Pretty sure it's the apartment complex Just SW of Bloor and Dovercourt. A friend lives there - they're quite nice inside and have amazing views. She's lucky enough to have an East facing unit with a very similar view!
