I agree. It's sad to see the crossroads of our rapid transit lines is surrounded by empty fields. The are will be redeveloped, slowly but surely.

The triangular lot across the street from Bayview is set to become Trinity Centre, a three tower (65, 56 and 23 floors) mixed use complex. It should start construction this year, presumably, possibly after the pedestrian bridge over the Trillium tracks is completed.

LeBreton is on its umpteenth redevelopment plan, this time far more realistic than in the past. The NCC is focusing on the Pimisi station area (near the future central library), so it could be a decade+ before the Bayview area is redeveloped.

Otherwise, the City has its Bayview Yards Innovation Centre a block north of the station. They plan on expanding towards the station in the coming years. Again though, it could be a while.

I'm hoping that within 30 years, the entire LeBreton area is redeveloped.

Ottawa would have been better served with a height limit of 8-10 story like Washington. The focus should be on making things look grand and pretty; roads, buildings, public spaces, parks, monuments. It's a sad city compared to what it could have been. Just another mid-sized Ontario/ Us city.

Totally.

The shame with Ottawa isn't that it's downtown skyscrapers aren't tall enough, they're actually too tall. Or for that matter, it's a shame that they exist at all.

I would have gone with the drama of the gothic spires of parliament with a height limit of 40m in the downtown core, exceptions for significant buildings like the chateau laurier and others. Like Washington, or Paris, or London.

Instead we have a diet-London, ONT skyline unceremoniously attached to the beauty of parliament hill.

I never thought about it that way.

It's true that the approx. 20-25 storey limit ends up being a kind of worst of both worlds situation.

Is it me or is everyone maybe jealous of Ottawa?

The advantage of the average 300-ish feet height limit is a compact CBD. Had we limited height to 100-150 feet (as it was prior to the 60s), we would have ended up with a sprawling downtown core, sacrificing some heritage along the way or, even more office space would have been built in Federal suburban campuses and office parks.

I would not say that. At least not in terms of skyline.

I guess I still don't find it preserves the sightlines of historic buildings that well, at least from most angles.

Though the CBD canyons are fairly decent and complete I'd grant you that. Though short in distance and height. If you look up.

Ottawa needed a city plan of a type never seen in Canada. Ideally, it would have been a downtown of heavy Chateau-styled mid-rise blocks, similar to some of the apartments on Sherbrooke in Montreal. As it is, it's a vaguely Gothic Madison. A barely-there capital for a barely-there country.

We had such a plan in 1915. It included our first "subway" proposal as well.

The Great War and the fire that destroyed the Centre Block were the likely cause for the death of this grand plan.
