Executive Flight Centre is gaining a lot of altitude in the niche market of providing one-stop services for aviation clients.

They've achieved 35-per-cent business growth in the past two years and just signed a significant aviation fuel deal with Shell, business development vice-president Ted Chow says.

They are also opening a 27,000 square foot hangar at the International next month with Sunwest Aviation, Canadian North and Regional One being the main tenants.

It will complement the large passenger lounge and refuelling centre that accommodates everything from small private planes to large jets.

There's also an executive lounge that's been used by such stars as John Travolta and country singer Faith Hill.

"There's been a big growth in general aviation in recent years and we have diversified to serve that niche market," Chow says.

The Calgary-based company has also spread its wings into construction with the WestJet hangar and FedEx cargo building at the International.

"We took the initiative and financed the projects, and they bought them from us. It worked very well," Chow says.

Fuel still makes up 50 per cent of the business, and they can sell it to the general aviation client cheaper because of their low overhead, he says.

Also, the big oil companies want customers to pay in 14 days, which most small clients find difficult, while EFC allows them 30 to 45 days.

The 10-year deal with Shell, which has a 10-year option, means EFC will be a Shell reseller at 16 locations across Western Canada, including Fort McMurray, Fort St. John, B.C., and Terrace, B.C.

For the very little airport/flight knowledge that I have.. what are the chances of Westjet becoming an international airline??? Didn't they specialize in regional flights and become successful from that? Do they have what it takes to compete internationally?

their model was and is still is regional focus with just now a more national presence.

737 are all that they own which gives them excellent economies and efficiencies but international travel would require a widebody.

The 777 would be too big. Maybe the 787-8 or the slightly higher capacity 787-9. The 787-8 would carry up to 223 passengers in a two-class config, or 296 in two-class - similar in capacity and size to a 767-300 or an A330-200.

For comparison, a 777-200 can take up to 300 passengers in a two-class configuration, or 400 in a two-class config. Most airlines would usually put in 25-50 less, though.

If WestJet wanted to start flying transatlantic or even transpacific routes, the 787 would be the best bet, if it's not going to use second-hand 767s.

Nope, because as they have stated themselves several times, they are not going to break their business model that is working for them. A lot of the Westjet kool-aid drinkers act like it's a for sure thing, and that once Westjet goes international they are going to slaughter every other airline out there (because you know, outside of Canada EVERYBODY knows about how super duper Westjet is! )

If Westjet decided to go international they'd either have to go budget style (a la Air Transat) or they'd actually have to become a real airline and join IATA (not cheap), develop interline agreements with other major carriers, and somehow get their hands priceless slots at the worlds biggest hubs (LHR, FRA, CDG, NRT etc.)

I have a feeling Port Alberta is gonna be HUGE HUGE for our economy. Think of all the freakin things today that is "made in China".. now if we can tap into that and become a major distribution centre for many Chinese buinesses.. can you say cha-ching!

My only complaint is.. Why did they name it Port Alberta and not Port Edmonton?!

It would have been cool to name it Port Edmonton for sure, but I think once this thing gets going, EVERYONE will know where Edmonton is.

777s will be too big for them. The 787 will be the logical choice in the long term. For short term, they could lease used 767s.

But I don't see WS going international for another 5-7 years.
