What is the name for the concrete ring, sheet piling system used for the core? Also, how is the conrete adhered to the sheet piling? Were spurs welded on beforehand?
No sign of utility work today, but the top down work has begun.
Not sure who the contractor is ( Dixon ? ) but they are putting "a small capwall in".

I'm really curious why Shelboune hasn't installed any kind of signage or advertising at the site. They could generate a lot of interest just from the boats passing by and cars up on Wacker Drive. Anyone know why they are not taking advantage of this?

Why do I get the feeling that the "work" being done at the site now is roughly equivalent to the hanging of brackets for the curtain wall at Waterview last month?....

they are banking a lot on this building, and they're not gonna let it stop anytime soon. I mean, I had no idea they were gonna start work on the garage so soon, but thanks to harry, we know otherwise. And they still have to get utility stuff taken care of

Yes, this doesn't look like anything to do with a big multi-million dollar construction contract. Where are the materials, where are the people? This looks like busy work being performed to temporarily alay concerns while a desperate behind-the-scenes drama is unfolding to salvage the project. Just like Waterview...
With the effort that Shelborne put in over the past 9 months to market this building on several continents, it has to be a disappointing departure from Kelleher's original hopes to have sold only 30% of the building. I haven't seen any elaboration on that claimed sales figure. Is it 30% of the units, 30% of the square footage, or 30% of the proposed sale value? Either way (and I suspect it's 30% of the units, heavily biased toward the cheaper end of the spectrum, or Shelborne would have been more specific), this is woefully short of what is needed to secure financing to start *real* construction in the current financial climate.
I think this project is experiencing trouble, or Kelleher would be much more eager to speed the project along and claim his "profits". For a construction site to sit idle for a good deal of the summer in Chicago, something must be wrong.
I want to see this thing built of course. But let's face it. If this were a subdivision in Huntley sitting completely idle for all of July and the salesman told you that everyone downed tools and walked only because ComEd was "upgrading a transformer" off in a corner somewhere, I'm sure you'd be skeptical.
The difference with Waterview is that we knew Teng was having some financial problems from the getgo. With the Spire, we didn't even know how the hell they're doing until they said "bam! 30% sold," which, during that time, people speculated that "ZOMG project is dieing" since there isn't news about sales.
It's a 2000-foot behemoth with unusual financing methods; so I guess we can expect all kinds of skepticism.
I don't think this project is experiencing trouble, your just projecting the doom factor that doesn't exist. Many people aren't used to this way of business where information isn't released every week on progress.
This isn't a subdivision in Huntley, it's going to be a 2,000' tall masterpiece. They still have to do a bit more excavation in the core pit as well, at least 10'-15' more.
